Didn’t the stabbing incident also play into his health too? Thought I read somewhere that he never fully recovered from that.

“Most overrated band in history“

When I read the thread title, I thought to myself, how long will this take to get a negative reply.
The first reply-6 minutes!
I believe that there’s a significant number of posters on this board who are immediately contrary to any statement, no matter how benign.

I love his style of slide guitar and it's wild he never did that til after the Beatles. It shows up on Free As a Bird though
It made at least a brief appearance on All You Need Is Love, although petered out in real time.

John Lennon
Harry Nilsson
Alice Cooper
Mickey Dolenz

Collectively known (during Lennon’s “Lost Weekend” years) as the Hollywood Vampires.

John played a decent slide and was a pretty good guitar player in his own right

No, I know. I think it's closer to say Nilsson came pretty close to ruining Lennon with liquor. Sheesh, the lost weekend was soaked in booze.

They were all spectacular - and I think a good argument for Paul being the greatest bassist and guitarist of all time.

He did very admirably end up growing into quite songwriter, with several in The Beatles pantheon.

But he still didn't write "the best".

The sheer mass of really good to wonderful Lennon/McCartney compositions* in the Beatles’ catalogue makes me have to disagree with you at least to the point that it’s arguably at least around a tie.

*Some being truly collaborative works, others (notably “Yesterday” to McCartney or “In My Life” by Lennon actually solely written & composed by one or the other)
