It's not the wise thing to do. And you would be afraid to park in front my house so don't act like a tough guy.

What do the hoodlums do in the FQ anyway? I see packs of them walking up and down the street yet I never see them inside any of the places I frequent. If the answer is they just buy drinks and walk around then maybe the solution is to eliminate the Big arse Beer and street front drink places. Not saying you can't walk around with a drink obviously but maybe you should have to go into a legit bar to get one. Just spitballing here. Thoughts?

I generally just get a drink or two and walk up and down the street. My idea of hitting the quarter now is shopping on Royal, but in the day I would get a drink and walk around. Maybe go to Razzoo's or BBC or the Beach.
I preferred Frenchmen but it has gotten too touristy too.

If that's the case then (as I said previously) the NOPD needs to go back to what they used to do. If you aren't working or frequenting a business, then move along. No loitering.

So Canal street isn't undertaking major changes right now?
They aren't closing down the ghetto shops left and right? They haven't opened new theaters for the arts? They haven't expanded luxury living and hotels?

they still have a long way to go

well I live uptown and have a condo in the warehouse district. I'm downtown a few time a month, I see what's going on.....yes they have made progress, however, Canal street and the FQ still have a long way to go to rid out the bad elements....and it can be done, but they need to steam forward and not just be complacent like you seem to be.

Know what we need too? More lighting.

Being paid for by a separate grant, and YEs NOLA does need more lighting.
You don't think street lights deter crimes?
And make it easier to see criminals in the dark?

Infastructure? No, it's BEING done in that area.
Not NEARLY enough. Canal street is still so ghetto it hurts.

Any gunman can go to any city and do the exact same thing.
Sure but it's happening here.

But can they get away with it?
YAY! Let's put that in our next marketing campaign! Come to NOLA! Where you can shoot 10 people and get away with it! Yes YOU!

I think we need more surveillance, that is a huge flaw, but nothing you do will stop this kind of thing from being POSSIBLE.
Thanks for letting me know that anything is possible. Never knew that. You still need to look at why does it happen in the first place? Why here and not most other cities in the world?

Face it, if we really want this type of thing to stop, the Quarter and surrounding areas need to get cleaned up.

There's nothing worse than when an OP updates his thread and has the update on a random page instead of his original post.

This is the third Bourbon shooting in three years. Not a lot based on other areas but enough to alert the tourists.
I don't know why you think you can compare Bourbon to "other areas." In no way whatsoever can you compare Bourbon to the projects. That's called being in denial. Oh, Bourbon is perfectly safe! They had less shootings than the Cooper projects! Yay! That's bullshite and you know it. Makes no sense to compare the two.

Canal St is an embarrassment to this city.
I have never in my life heard anyone say, "hey lets go take a stroll down Canal Street" and I've never suggested to an out of town friend to do it either.
You hear that about Fulton Street, Ferret, Magazine, Maple, Oak, but NEVER about Canal.

Just got the 411 from one of my Westbank peoples. His sister baby daddy was the dude that was shot in the arse. He used the derogatory word for a black person but replaced the the first letter with a W to describe the guy.

Every time I drive past that one on the corner of Canal and Basin, I wonder how empty it is.

And Canal has amazing potential. I know when my parents were coming up, it was the shopping mecca. That's how it should be. It should be filled with amazing shops.

Look the city is majority black, so it's never ever ever going to be lilly white downtown, and people who expect that need to realize the demographics of the city.
What you call ghetto someone else calls "in" or "hip"

If "long way to go" means getting rid of the poor black community in a very densely populated traditionally black southern city that is put up against most major cities with the amount of free gents de colour pre-civil war. These demographic has been here for a long time and not going anywhere. May as well say "give up" if that's your end goal.

Also the belly of the tourist industry is ran and profits are made on the backs of most of these poor blacks. If they were to unionize as a group and say we aren't showing up for work say a Super Bowl weekend, the city would be brought to a halt

And the ones screaming "culture" just look stupid. Yeah there is a sad culture of violence that has permeated several generations of these poor blacks that has to make a complete u-turn, but not all poor blacks are "thugs" and do offer a unique culture to this city believe it or not.
I'll be happy one day to have raised my kids around some of the great cultures that have been a part of this city for 300 years, many associated with the black community.
