CDL is needed for anything beyond a class 6 truck in most states - which is a 26,000 lb GVW.

It varies slightly by state, but typically only if it's participating in commerce activity. Even grandpa in his Class A motorhome with air brakes still gets a free pass and that's exploited a lot.

2023 Ford Super Duty Towing, power numbers revealed- WYBI

Definitely not buying a diesel. Ford diesels are huge pieces of shite when things are going well for the company. And right now Ford is a hot mess - they’ve messed up every single new product launch for 4+ years now. And their supply chain management mistakes aren’t making that better.

And this is a huge mistake:

quote:

One brand-new powertrain joins the 2023 Ford Super Duty lineup: a 6.8-liter gas V8 replacing the outgoing 6.2-liter engine. The new design and enlarged displacement offer a step up over the previous truck’s baseline output, managing 405 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. For reference, the old 6.2 put out 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.

The 6.2L was probably the only consistently reliable engine that Ford made for their trucks. It’s not the most powerful, but it had a lot of appeal for fleets that needed higher payload than a half ton truck but not the higher towing capacity.

Unless the new 6.8 engine isn’t any more expensive and is equally as reliable (unlikely) and equally as efficient (possible but unlikely) as the old 6.2….I would have spent the R&D on this engine on another product entirely.

Probably after markups

F250 base( reg cab) 43.8k
Limited Crew 96k

F350 base ( reg cab) 45k
Limited Crew 97.2k

F450 reg cab 58.4k
Limited crew 103k

No options of course.

I see F150 XLTs listed around here from 52-80k

Guess I'm never buying another new truck unless prices do a 180

I actually don't have a ton of problem with the Ford engines. Now the old Navstar ones, frick those things (except the 7.3 which was awesome).

The company I used to work for years ago had a fleet of nothing but Ford diesels. For about 5-7 years, every single one that they bought had major engine issues that required a lot of downtime to repair. So they eventually updated to the next generation of the same trucks. They ended up sucking just as bad.

Why does Ford feel the need to completely change engines on the trucks every 5 years or so?

Because soon after release the public discovers it is a POS and needs to design the POS engine ASAP

Why retire the 6.2 only to go to the 6.8?

They have the 7.3 if you want to move up and the 6.2 is a fantastic proven motor.

My 2021 F250 with the 7.3 pulls 10k lbs without breaking a sweat.

A lot of guys could get by just fine with the gas engine.

It will be something I consider when I buy a new tow vehicle in the next couple years. I’d like to upgrade some of my equipment and a larger truck would help make that happen. Those towing numbers are impressive.
