For some reason, GMC gave the newest Yukon full-size SUV the ability to spin like a top

Motor Trend

So, how do the GMC Yukon's conventionally driven wheels help the vehicle spin? We weren't able to extract many details from GMC on this front—the engineers were hoping to keep a lid on the feature until a later date, so we did our best to pepper them with questions at the '21 Yukon's reveal event. Here's what we could surmise: "Hurricane Turn" functionality is engaged when the Yukon's electronic brain detects that the driver intentionally has done the following: Deactivates stability control, cranked the steering wheel hard to either the left or the right, and floored the gas.

If the truck is on a low-friction surface, such as snow or gravel, the system jumps into action, manipulating the brakes, particularly on the side you're steering toward (if you're steering to the right, then it grabs the right brakes, and vice versa) to instigate a sort of donut move. In this state, the GMC rotates around its front axle, like someone competing in one of those spin-around-a-baseball-bat-before-running competitions. Keep your foot on the throttle, and the GMC's "Hurricane Turn" system will gradually tighten the donut spin radius—a technical term we just made up—until the Yukon is nearly spinning around its central axis, like the Rivian

They’ve programmed a feature to enable donuts while off roading.

A turning radius of almost 0. This is so delightfully unnecessary.

Crazy...

I had a Sierra Denali Truck in the early/Mid 2000s with 4 wheel steering. It had the same turning radius as a Chevy S10, I can only imagine this thing.

That made me laugh a lot. Seems impractical and unnecessary AND I WANT IT NOW.

If I bought one, I would definitely try it.

ETA: I might actually buy one now.

This will be tested out up here in WI.

Not hard to spin one around in place with 4x4 anyway.

People saying this is useless have obviously never gone off-roading and come to the end of their path with absolutely no real way to turn around.

I live a dair amount off the beaten path. I take a two trips a year to MOAB. And I explore all 70k acres behind the house fairly regularly in my daily driver or side by sides.

That is a hilarious but useless feature

It’s really not. I can think of about 3 times just this past couple weeks this would have been nice.

Not necessary doesn’t equal not useful.

You don’t need half the bells and whistles on trucks these days but they make life easier

If I come to the end of the road and shits so tight my only option is a 180...I’m backing the frick up, not stomping the gas and hoping the computer gets this right.

Now when things are a bit more open then frick yeah I’ll use it because I can.

Ummmm...how does "gradually" help here if the trail is that tight?

Airplanes have had technology to compensate for people's dumbass mistakes since the 80's. Good to see cars catching up.

I recently had an experience in the woods wherein I had to back up a muddy, rutted hill with a very steep incline and a curve. It kind of sucked

I suppose how gradually is the question. If it’s over the course of the first 90 degrees, maybe helpful - if it’s on your 6th rotation, less so

It’s like “Launch Control” for The 911, GTR, or Supra.

You can use it, but they’ll know it if you do...and they may eliminate the warranty.
