Weird season

I was more impressed/amazed by Sally. It was crawling and still made a Cat. 2. It fed on the warm waters just off the coast. So many people wrote it off as not having anything beyond a Cat. 1 in it, but it made a run at a 3 before landfall.

I’m not sure if they’ve finished post-season analysis on Sally, but I wouldn’t be surprised if were upgraded to a cat. 3.

There was 13' of storm surge on the NE corner of the bay. Snuck up on a whole lot of people.

Here's an image to stir debate with the class. Fresh from the 2021 AMS Tropical Conference:

damn good thing Zeta was moving at 25 mph and accelerating when it made landfall instead of like 12 mph or slower

I refer you back to Sally. 2mph when it made the Northward turn.

This will mess with people's travel plans next week. I guarantee it.

A fast moving late season storm at the end of a busy season so people didn't pay it much attention

Zeta worked over the Fourchon/Leeville area

it was supposed to get destroyed by wind sheer as a cold front approached

but apparently it came in at just the right angle of attack that not only did the wind sheer not destroy it... but rather helped feed the storm and strengthen it

ETA: that approaching cold front was also the reason Zeta was moving so fast at landfall

Landfall was pretty much right in the middle of Timbalier Bay. But there's not many places to chose from there so they went with hurricane magnet Cocodrie.

Same thing happened with Michael. Shear aligned with forward motion and as a trough approaches there's a large scale increase in lift and ventilation.

Mid to late October hurricanes traveling NE. Something to research in the future

My question is how that sweet spot ends up working. There's still vertical shear, but at least aligned in motion. Upper divergence better for the eyewall updrafts and is enough to counteract is the increase in vertical shear?

Obviously doesn't work for tropical storms but does seem to for a mature hurricane. Also, seems like it's actually the start of the extra-tropical transition but one where the hurricane gets a boost at the start.
