The Louisiana Supreme Court says the 2020 bar exam will be administered virtually in open-book format after the coronavirus outbreak forced the state to delay the test in July.

An announcement from the high court Wednesday says the new one-day, virtual format will be open-book with no form of live monitoring. Exam questions will be sent by email and responses will be sent to an email address set up by the Louisiana Supreme Court Committee on Bar Admissions.

LASC statement

quote:

“The Louisiana Supreme Court Committee on Bar Admissions has worked diligently throughout this pandemic to find workable solutions which will allow applicants the ability to safely sit for the Bar Exam while being mindful of issues which may present themselves that could affect the applicants’ ability to test,” said Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson. “The Committee on Bar Admissions advised that it is not feasible to administer the remote bar examinations utilizing the current software vendor, therefore today’s Order provides Bar Exam applicants with the opportunity to sit for the Bar Exam without further delay due to conditions presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and possible unexpected technical issues which may have interrupted their remote testing.”

anybody got any inside info on what's up with the software issue?

Better than no exam at all.

Honestly open book doesn’t really help all that much. It’s a race against the clock, you don’t really have a ton of time to look up material.

I wish you could still take the bar in La without going to law school.

While I tend to agree with you, it would certainly help to have a one or two page "cheat sheet" handy while taking the test.

Well sure, I would have loved a cheat sheet when I took it.

I’m just explaining to those who haven’t experienced taking the Bar that having it be open book doesn’t make the test a gimme.

Definitely. Some of the tests are a really big time crunch, like torts.

Most still don't have to take it. This is just for those from out of state or who have ALREADY failed it.

Well in MA I know they’re administering it remotely but administrators will be able to “look in” on students to make sure they aren’t all just sitting in a room together taking it or anything like that.

Also, the software that is used to administer the exam is such that once you start the clock and begin the test, no other applications are accessible until you finish. Not to say you couldn’t use two computers.

The bar has a 80% pass rate anyway. The bar is way easier than passing the CPA, CFA or Med Boards.

Totally agree. I never really understood why the bar exam was closed book in the first place. Granted I'm a law school student, so I'm biased, but the legal jobs that I have worked at have shown me lawyers usually don't have the answers they need in their head in the first place. Legal research and writing skills should be more important for the bar exam in my opinion.

Pass rate was in the mid-60s when I took it. Don’t know about now.

Are there any time constraints? Will they have to have it emailed back within a certain number of hours?

I hope these kids are looking to hang a shingle, bc I know of at least two people, who control hiring, that have said that they wouldn't dare hire somebody licensed without taking it.

On the other hand, taking the test anyway is the only resume I'd need from one of these people.

"Why'd you take the test in 2020?"

"I worked my arse off to get ready for that test. Also, taking the BAR is just part of being an attorney. I wasn't letting them take that away from me."

"Let me show you your office."

I'm sure most of us would agree that test takers should be allowed to have the cc, RS, CCP, ccrp, etc, but it is bullshite that, this go around, they either: don't have to take it or they get to use the internet, a friend, a family friend attorney, a professor, etc to take their seemingly untimed exam.
