Just what Louisiana needs, more shitstain lawyers.
Can we do the whole nation a favor and just skip adding more lawyers this year?

Well.

Practicing law is open book.

So I guess that works.

The part that makes the CPA easier is that you take it by part so you can fail one and just take it next testing period. The bar is all or nothing. I will say the depth of knowledge the CPA tests, especially FAR, is nuts.

Yea but there’s the time expiration factor for the CPA. If you don’t pass all 4 parts within a certain time period you have to start all over again.

The Professional Engineering Exam is open book. They will let you bring in whatever reference materials you want. If you don't know the material, the books won't help you pass.

Also the pass rates for all (4) parts of the CPA exam are much lower than the bar. The bar exam has been diluted and does not carry as much weight. Anyone who thinks the bar is harder or even comparable to the CPA needs to get their head examined.

I’m currently studying for the CFA (Level 1) and my insecure attorney friends got really defensive when I mentioned it was harder than the bar

I believe this and I know jack shite about the bar exam. I was working with an attorney who had been practicing for 30+ on a client's succession one time. I pointed out to him numerous tax and legal issues with how he was handling it. After researching for weeks, he told me I was correct.

I just finished all 4 parts of the cpa exam.

No you don’t have to take it all over again. You just have to complete all 4 within 18 months, so the one that expires in 18 months you would have to retake.

Hey, he has a post grad degree. He could totally pass the Bar if he's given the internet and an unlimited amount of time. Show some respect.

I could see open book helping out with certain sections. Torts is not that deep (or wasn’t); basically, you needed the elements of negligence and apply it to the fact pattern. LA Civ Pro was word for word recycled from past tests (God bless that section.) Open book would most assuredly help with Criminal Law and it’s absurd quest to ask you about any and all crimes in the book.

Con Law, you’d be effed.

Well sure, I would have loved a cheat sheet when I took it.

I’m just explaining to those who haven’t experienced taking the Bar that having it be open book doesn’t make the test a gimme.

Yeah, it would definitely be helpful, but as you said most of the test is all essay. Not like you can flip to a page in your textbook and say "Oh, here's the answer." Don't have near enough time for that. You'd still need to know the material pretty well and just use the book as a crutch if you were fuzzy on how a statute was worded.

As another poster mentioned LA Civ Pro was recycled questions, so you could definitely ace that section if it was open book. And a cheat sheet would be great for a quick reference to elements of a crime or the negligence test, etc.

And I agree with another poster, I don't see why you shouldn't at least have access to the Code articles, Statutes, etc. You have access to them in real life. I know the point of the test is to determine your minimal competence and all, and of course you should know some stuff off the top of your head, but I don't think it's necessary to be able to cite the exact Code article number off the top of your head

Average pass rates are up in the 50s now... which is way too high and part of the reason the exam is being redone.

But that's still way less than the bar. So even with getting to take it in sections, it's still way harder than the bar to pass.

Many professional certification exams are open book, doesn’t make them in any way easy. Hopefully the bar exam will be properly designed with a pass rate similar to the live exam.

I guess that's better than just admitting anyone who signed up to take the test without requiring them to actually take the test.

Considering you only need the equivalent of a C open book makes it really easy to pass. Most of the graders skim the answers looking for key words and limited analysis. Being able to have all the necessary elements/tests/factors at your finger tips makes this a breeze to achieve minimum competency.
