Better have the maintenance records. If maintained correctly you can expect an $800 alternator replacement soon

Got my son an 09 ES350 with 145,000 miles on it after he wrecked his 2010 ES350 with 120,000 miles. Four months and $7000 later had to put a new engine in it. Bought it from a Lexus dealer. Beware the high mileage engines.

I have an 01 LX/Lexus land cruiser with 202k and runs like a top. Hoping to get another 100k out of it.

If you maintain them they’re pretty good.

As someone with a 2006 4 runner, 250k miles.
I really hate the fact I cannot buy a new car right now.

2 years ago: changed driver front wheel bearing
Last year: changed alternator and timing belt
this year: passenger front wheel bearing is pending...

Great thing I can fix it, however it is a pain in the arse and sinking $ everytime.

I'd get something newer (2008-2010) and fork 5-6k more knowing its probably better off.

Had a 2012 ES350 that took me to 230,000 with almost no problems before I finally traded it in. Maybe you just need to take care of your shite baw.

What are you talking about? That’s very minor stuff, you should be able to do the alternator and belt yourself easily. It’s a vehicle, it requires maintenance and mechanical parts wear out over time. Your comment makes no sense considering you have 250k miles on it

I used to feel like you, but as I've gotten older, it's become a labor of love for me. I enjoy communing with and knowing what my car needs. It's a point of pride, satisfaction and confidence in my car and in myself knowing something was done right and knowing I was responsible to the health and well being of my car.

I guess my point is, as I get older, I realize more and more that I won't have that many more chances in life to give my son or my grandson (if I had one) life lessons while spending valuable time together with me teaching him the basics of auto mechanics and repair.

If you really like your car, consider keeping it up. I assure you, you'll spend a hell of a lot more each month on a new replacement. While inconvenient sometimes, working on your own car is a sign of manhood, being self sufficient and taking pride in your possessions.

If that were my 2006, I would keep her. But your situation may differ from mine. I have other vehicles to drive.

I am going to assume it is an RX because if it is a GX or LX at that price is almost certainly has issues.

It is a solid vehicle and if everything functions normally it will likely go a LOT more miles. The one issue is the Lexus 3.0 engine from the era is known for sludging.

Outside of pulling the valve covers there is no good way to determine if the engine has sludge issues but if it emits oil (blue) smoke on startup or the dipstick shows black oil I would avoid it, though both are true for any car. The 1MZ-FE is an engine I would recommend being scrupulous about oil changes. 5k or 6 months and use synthetic. For most engines this is overkill but it is solid preventative maintenance for that particular engine.

BTW I owned a 1MZ-FE in my last travel car and it had 390k on the clock when the car was totaled. I followed the oil change advice above and the engine internals were never an issue.

Just changed that on my wife’s RX350. Those things are cheap to replace.

500k if you maintain it. Just watch the globes on the AHC and keep the timing belt done.
