they should push this hard until things settle down tbh
a one time payment of 1200 is not enough for people in need right now.
2k isn't enough. Every person in the US should get at least 10k a month until things settle down in 5-10 years.

frick it, do it and make China pay for it. Just take it out of our debt.

Canada has a similar policy but sure let's compare it to Venezuela

If everyone doesn't get it, how is it considered "universal"?

Because OP is an idiot. This isn't anywhere close to actual UBI

It's cute you think any sort of UBI implemented in this country won't be means tested.

Don’t worry folks, as long as we still have the US Navy and good pilots we don’t really need a dollar to be actually worth anything. Just print some more.

Fixed.

$2,000 monthly payment to qualifying Americans until employment returns to pre-COVID-19 levels
Employment was at historical levels. We may NEVER get back to that point. So sounds like a great plan to me. Send me and my wife our 48,000/year for a few years and I will be able to retire early to a nice cozy cabin in the mountains.

Setting aside the stimulus we would still have to cut federal spending by 20% across the board then freeze that spending for 10 years just to get the debt back down to Bush II levels.
BTW, Ro Khanna for president in 2024. If you're a Sanders voter now, follow Khanna's Twitter and you'll like what you see. Or if you're a right-winger, you can always follow him just to get pissed off on a daily basis.

Wait until The Human Fund starts issuing checks, that’s when the big bucks will roll in.

You're right, the actual UBI that's been floating around is 1k per month and that would still cost $3-4 trillion per year.

Exactly. There's no political will. Watch what comes of this viral pandemic, that will tell you how hard it is to get things done in DC without some strong lobbyi$t$ pushing your platform.
Common sense from this would dictate passing some protectionist laws to at least bring back pharma manufacturing and the creation of medical devices back into the US. I'll bet a steak dinner at Ruth's Chris that won't pass out of a committee, much less make it to the President's desk.
No one goes to DC to serve just one term and anyone trying to push the types and levels of cuts required would be a death knell for the political career of anyone pushing/supporting such legislation.

Thanks but hard pass. I passed introductory Econ in college with flying colors, I don't need the "flat earthers" of Economics trying to convince me that monetary inflation is a myth.

The most prominent UBI proposals in this country's history haven't been.

I don’t know much about economics, but is it possible the powers that be want some inflation? If I’m thinking about this correctly, you can’t get out of the ultra low loan rates unless you get some significant inflation. Once you start experiencing some significant inflation you don’t mind paying higher rates for money today. Is my thinking correct?
Any way, some significant inflation is probably good for the majority of Americans because they hold more debt than savings. Is my thinking correct on this?
Hell, I just want my 2 grand per adult and 500 per kid. That’s $5,000 a month! The government already has an amount of debt that I can’t even imagine, so let’s see what happens if we double it

I've heard this argument before, the argument that says it hasn't been done on a wide-enough scale to truly be considered UBI. A square wheel will never work as well as a round one no matter how perfectly square you make them.
Consider the minimum wage. This is an almost-universal basic income level for those with a job yet every few years there are calls to raise it even higher.
Why?
Because it's Demand-side economics and Demand-side economics is like a dog with a stubbed tail chasing his tail. The very movement to reach it is what keeps it out of reach.
In a Demand-side scenario Prices go up because of greater Demand, not down. This is because Demand-side economics drives down Supply. Normally Price would end up leveling out Demand so that Supply once again reaches an equilibrium, in a minimum wage hike instance the hike creates the new equilibrium. In a situation where you have near infinite money though, it creates a near-infinite Demand and that means Price can go up nearly infinitely.
In other words, the implementation of UBI is what will mean an increase in taxes and an increase in taxes will drive prices high enough that UBI will have to be increased, which will cause taxes to be raised again in order to pay for the higher UBI and this will drive prices high enough that UBI will have to be increased again, which will cause taxes to be raised higher in order to afford the new UBI level which will drive prices higher...
You want Zimbabwe-level hyperinflation? UBI is how you get it.

The level of inflation really depends on where and how the funding is generated and used.
Any UBI proposal should only be considered along with how it will be funded.

Yet.
UBI will most certainly be means tested.
