Two HH60 Blackhawks of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) were conducting a training exercise at approximately 10 p.m. when they crashed, Brendalyn Carpenter-Player, the director of the Fort Campbell Public Affairs, told Fox News Digital. "The crewmembers were flying two HH60 Blackhawk helicopters during a routine training mission when the incident occurred. The status of the crew members are unknown at this time," Carpenter-Player said. "The command is currently focused on caring for the servicemembers and their families."

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the crash on Twitter, saying multiple fatalities were expected. "We’ve got some tough news out of Fort Campbell, with early reports of a helicopter crash and fatalities are expected. @kystatepolice, @KentuckyEM and local officials are responding. We will share more information as available," he wrote. "Please pray for all those affected."

I heard an initial report that it was at least 9, maybe more.

Very sad. God bless their families

Sucks when that happens. I lost a cousin due to a military copter crash up in Alaska many years ago. He was a pilot had spent a couple tours in Nam flying guys in and out of hot LZ's and never even got a scratch.

Comes back stateside and gets killed in a crash on a training flight. He and a couple other crewmen died in the crash and only one guy survived.

How he survived is nothing short of a miracle as he was found badly injured but alive a couple hundred yards away from the crash site.

RIP Soldiers

Very sad! I know jack shite about choppers but in this day and age, I can't believe these things happen. I can't believe the technology on these things don't help avoid these tragedies. I'm sure there are a lot of factors at play.

Technology only gets you so far. I have no idea what happened in this instance, but if they were training like they fight there are times where the aircraft are so close it can happen.

Flying with Night Vision devices is very dangerous.

If it's not computer error, it's pilot error. Those machines are so technologically advanced, so it usually falls on the pilot(s). If I'm not mistaken, helicopter crashes were about to outpace actual combat deaths during the final years of our involvement in the Middle East. It's really shitty.

Wild to think that the tail rotor on a helicopter is essentially what keeps it from going completely out of control.

Blackhawk flight systems are solid as a rock and there are so many redundancies in critical sensors and components, I highly doubt it was on the craft. That doesn't mean that the Army is perfect in its maintenance of equipment by any means.

Tragic for the families of those involved. I had a cousin die in a classified action almost 30 years ago and my Aunt and Uncle still haven't had closure.

My uncle retired as a CWO flying Blackhawks at Ft. Campbell and retired in Clarksville. He texted me a while ago that it was a midair, 9 dead. 3rd bird had a hard landing attempting to pick up survivors.

My brother is a blackhawk pilot so this scared the bejesus out of me.

Thankfully, he was not involved. Prayers to the families.

My wife's first cousin died in the accident. While she wasn't close to him, obviously it's unsettling. I never had the chance to meet the young man. Her mom was much closer to her nephew and was in tears on the phone this morning. I had just read about the accident right before my wife walked into the kitchen and told me about the call she just received. Crazy.

At the risk of identifying someone (it's public on facebook now apparently), the young man who died was engaged and to be married this summer. Heartbreaking.

My son was a crew chief on a Blackhawk for 6 years; he said their nickname is “lawn dart”.

He was at Fort Drum when one went down on a training exercise that killed 11 on board. That was stressful until he was able to let us know he was ok.
Prayers for those killed and their families.

Can anyone explain the fault in these systems, whether tech or pilot error? This just happened in Huntsville recently.

Heart breaking is right. My son was originally assigned to the 101 but applied to and was selected for the 160th. The relief I felt knowing it wasn’t a 160th crash was 3 seconds because he likely knew these guys. From what I’ve heard it was medavac side.

It’s a harsh reminder how close they cut it each time they train.
