Rickles was brutal at those roasts.
One line to Nipsey Russell, "Nipsey, we'd ask you to speak but you know the blacks, your lips lock."
I grew up watching Sanford and Son with my Dad. He loved Redd Foxx and saw a few of his shows after moving to Las Vegas. Pop's actually buried in the same cemetery as Redd, just a short walk from him. Redd's mom passed 2 years after he did and is buried alongside him. Her maiden name was Sanford, thus the title of Redd's most popular show.

Had drinks with Redd in the late 80’s in Vegas. We ( me and my first wife) went to one of his comedy shows. Anyway he messed with us during his show( we were sitting up front) everything from oral sex , to what position and she goes black she’s never coming back. After the show the guard came and got us to come have drinks at a private bar back stage with girlfriend ( Asian lady). He. told how he had to do stand up because the IRS had taken everything he had. Redd was really a good guy and funny. I know CSB
I hope you appreciate just what a treasure that is.
Absolutely love me some Redd Foxx. One of the funniest people ever. RIP.

There is a clip of Sanford and Son where Fred goes to court against a white officer in front of a black judge.
The hilarity ensues.

Harlem Nights. One of the funniest movies you will ever see.
Richard Pryor was pretty damn good too.

It had its moments but was very uneven compared to Eddie’s previous works.
Best part was probably Arsenio and his crew chasing Eddie because he thought Eddie killed his brother.

Me and my father (who was almost deaf) sat right next the stage at one of his shows. My father loved Redd Foxx..Redd kept getting his cigarette ashes on those of us sitting at the stage. He looked down at my father during the show and said. "you ain't heard a thing i've said, have you" lol...my dad just sat there with a big smile on his face.
Redd's house wasn't far from the strip and the Sanford & Son truck was parked in his driveway. Was said that he was a kind man and a great neighbor to all who lived near him.

quote:Yes, it's fun to look back on this with nostalgia. A closer view would reveal less chipperness on the part of blacks/minorities that basically had to go along with it.
Amazing to think where we were then to now. Humor was making fun of yourself back then.
One quip from Milton Berle when Slappy White said, “what about the Jews?” Berle replied, “You need the Jews; Blacks have the rhythm, but Jews have the instruments.”

I remember watching this on its original airing. My grandfather used to love Sanford and Son.

Comedy is dead.
Political correctness has killed it.
