Stupid Question but why don’t they make cars like this anymore?
If you are just talking about the looks (curves, body lines, etc), it's because in the 60's cars were designed by humans cutting on clay models. Today car's are designed by humans sitting at a computer using Solidworks. Far more efficient, but it loses the human element.

A girl I dated got a Chevelle SS 350 for her 16’th birthday.About the 2’nd day she had it she was driving on Hwy 1,when it was 2 lanes ,the steering wheel came off in her hands.
She didn’t panic, she took her foot off the accelerator, turned off the ignition and let it drift to a stop off the shoulder.I was quite impressed that she remained so cool.

While they may be faster these days and get better mpg, make no mistake...there is NOTHING more soul-changing than getting in one of these old beasts and turning over a cammed up big-block that can barely maintain an idle.
I had a worked up Road Runner back in the day that would give immediate wood to any red-blooded American male within 1/4 when that beast turned over and fired up.

That is IF there was enough battery juice left to turn her over

For you old farts, how much did these cost back in the day? What would be an equivalent car purchase in today’s market?

They were about $3500 which is $24,708 today.

For my money the 69 RS/SS Camaro with the hideaway headlights, hounds tooth interior, and any of the big block Chevy engines (396, 427, 454) is the ultimate muscle car. Totally bad arse stance that is just so beautiful. Had an SS with a 454 and 4:11 gears in high school that would absolutely scream. Regret selling that one to this day.

My folks bought me a 1968 Camaro SS350 for H.S. graduation from McPete Chevrolet on Scenic Hwy. back in March of 1968. The car had no A/C because it was all about the HP's for me. Dad tried talking me into a loaded SS396 Chevelle, but I was set on the Camaro. The cost of my car was $3129.00. There was a 427 Corvette in the showroom that day. It's cost was $6149.
