that pumping station should have been in its present location when the canal was built!!!!!

Exactly! It was idiotic that the outflow canals were designed to just to allow water just to flow into those canals from the lake

I know they didn't but that could have been managed in several ways including the traditional Louisiana method of paying them off!!!
Another way could have been to build a new fishing port...

Those canals were built in the early 1900s.
If you want a billion dollar solution, sure. But there's a reason those new facilities weren't built until the feds paid for it.
New Orleans will never invest the hundreds of millions in capital to upgrade that drainage system that it needs.

Yeah some version of them were built that early.
If my memory is correct, the version that we have now was built in the late 50's or early 60's after a big congressional bill was passed.
They also didn't design them correctly then and failed to build them to the faulty design.

If anything is wrong all the Karens in the area would be on top of it.. There were some people speeding on Bonnabel and they raised a stink..Now there are cops out there writing tickets.. I heard the sirens the other night and the Karens were on their facebook page congratulating each other..

We are in the same Facebook group I’m sure.
The Karen’s have been somewhat kept in check lately until the speeding issue came up and now the hens are all going crazy again.
That and the homeless guy being accused of playing with himself in the Walgreens parking lot have been entertaining.
Fireworks guy seems to won over most people. He has a lot of support

Where they were built was the outline part of the city in the early 1900's... The area up to the pumping station from the lake was basically a swamp and farm lands...
This was Pontchartrain Blvd and Vets in 1957...
Hindsight....
If you look in Jefferson Parish, all the pump stations were put at the mouth of the canals on the lake... Built a half century later...

Is there still a fear that a hurricane will top the lakefront levees? It seems like that's what people talked the most about before Katrina.

Not really. It really didn’t come that close to topping them during Katrina and most have been raised and/or widened

It was a great place to live but now seems like a good place to die.

no. There were literally zero problems with the levees along the lakefront. Now with the surge barrier in pace, storm surge entering LP will be lessened,

The initial plan had pumps at the lake and a barrier to protect from storm surge. Local opposition and funding constraints from DC made the system turn out the way it did.
Now after the city floods, we get pumps at the lake and surge barriers.
The Corps literally has very little say so in what gets built. It's easy to blame them, but people should educate themselves.
