17th st pumps in Bucktown

I noticed the unsightly pumps have been removed that would pump rainwater out of the canal in case the floodgate was closed. This would have alleviated the pressure on the walls of the canal. Anyone know the plan now when the gate is closed?

were those the temporary pumps they installed until the bigger permanent ones were online?

Those were temporary pumps. A much bigger pumping facility was built near the old West End restaurant area, right where the beach volleyball place was (RIP).

There are permanent pumps closer to the lake

Yep. My business partner designed the pumps at the London Canal . The Corps got the smart idea to make the two canal temporary pumps uniform, so we met to discuss the differences. The 17th Street canal pumps were different in two main respects: They had a keel cooler instead of an on-skid radiator; and they had a pneumatic clutch so they could start the engine unloaded.
Both of those were idiotic. A keel cooler had two merits according to the engineers. First it would not result in heating of the enclosure, which was only a roof - no walls - so obviously heating wasn't a concern. Second, it was more efficient, which is meaningless for pumps that almost never run. On the other hand it is less reliable because the keel cooler requires regular cleaning.
The clutch was thought to be necessary because they didn't think the engine could start under pump loading. We explained that a centrifugal pump represents practically no load at startup. Plus, it reduced reliability because you would need a compressed air system. In short, our design was implemented at 17th Street as well as London Ave.
tl:dr - The Corps is useless, and just because someone has a professional license doesn't mean he's not an idiot.

I miss that area so much. I thought about how nice it would have been to have Coconut Beach and all of those places still out there.
That little restaurant that was in like an old house on the 17th street canal was just so damn chill and old school.

I’m pretty sure those were Design-Build jobs based on the short construction timeline, so the Corps would have just put out a performance requirement and not specified the details of cooling type.

I lived in an apartment in Bucktown for 10 years. I use to get on my bike and go ride the lakefront, and stop at coconut beach for a few cold beers before crossing back over the little bridge.
