Apex Predator, the writer for LaSportsman, goes offshore fishing in a 16' Blue wave all the time. He used to go fishing for specks at the first rigs and islands out of Cocodrie in a 13' aluminum boat named Lucky 13 too.

If your hull is deep, it is OK.

161 miles is a LONG way for a true offshore boat one way. Not saying it can't be done but it's not an everyday thing. Something else had to be at play here stalled engine something. Weather was crummy for offshore last few days bit do able not in a 15' boat however.

As for the small boats a 24' bay boat can be taken out offshore when picking your days. I don't mean 30 miles out but I take mine snapper fishing all the time out of Venice. If you use a brain and a buddy boat it's pretty safe.

We go out to the rigs south of Curlew Pass in a 21' single engine. My friends are free divers, but I stay up top and watch the boat. Doesn't seem too dangerous.

If you only have one engine and you can't see land it's dangerous. Not saying I haven't done it but that doesn't make it safe

Yep. People make the mistake all the time of thinking their single engine shallow draft 21' bay boat is a ship that can handle anything. shite can get bad quickly out there and if you loose power you might be fricked. Even if you don't loose it, your 8" draft bay boat isn't made for big swells and you might loose it anyway.

It's not too dangerous until it is too dangerous and too late to do anything about it. A nice one foot day can turn into a 5-7 washing machine day faster than you may be able to motor home.

Having a little respect for what can and does happen goes a long way. I was night fishing off of my place in SWFL last summer and watched the coasties run S&R for some dude who essentially killed himself and his family by taking his junk blow boat for a ride in the face of an incoming system.

Saw a bay boat put down its trolling motor about 45 miles south of grand Isle.

The ignorance involved in this are beyond belief.
I'm more interested in how the hell did he even manage to get that far out?

It never does until it is to late. You only have to get caught in the wrong situation once.

We were about 12 miles offshore when the steering cable broke. Do you have any idea how long it takes to idle in when a thunderstorms hits, chases off all other boats and 6-10 foot seas throw your 22 ft Proline round like a rag doll???

My buddies are oceanographers and civilian Navy divers...not the kind of guys who can afford a 30' boat with a pair of $15k engines. We average more than a couple college degrees each and do it all about as safely as you can...until those dumb bastards hop over the side of the boat with just masks/snorkels, fins, and spear guns.

Makes me so nervous when they go down. The biggest risk is something happens to them when they're down and we are so far from medical attention. But they know the risks.

15-20 isn't too bad. There's not a whole lot of room for bad weather to get between you and sheltered water and you can get back in a half hour or so.

Assuming you don't loose the engine.

I personally do not go out far enough to loose sight of land in unprotected waters in a single engine boat.

Was thinking the same thing, a boat that size has max about a 30-40 gallon tank. That doesn't make any sense.

40 gallon tank with a newer model 4 stroke engine I could easily see someone going out that far. But it is definitely a stupid move though.
