This. We are paying for their 3 hots and a cot, why not make them work and give back to society to a degree?
I mean if their choice is to be in prison, or train and get wrecked for a show for the public I don't have an issue at all with stuff like this? We should make them do some of the worst jobs, like be those guys that climb the cell phone towers.
As said, if they can make or grow stuff the public wants to buy I'm all for it.

Participating in the rodeo is a reward for the prisoners. They are excluded as punishment for bad behavior. It is part and parcel of the way things are run on "the farm".
I'm quite sure the prison gets a cut of the monies spent on the fabricated items, considering the prison provides the materials, training and equipment to manufacture them.

Its not legal, but you do realize that this guy could have been legally mentally retarded and had the functioning level of someone under 13 right? Doubtful certainly, but there is a high portion of inmates that are at the mental functioning level of someone under 15 years old.
