well maybe I'm just a callous butthead but so what? It's not like they sent him messages saying "you suck at life, you should go ahead and kill yourself". If these little brats were playing a "joke" that this girl had died, and then this young boy actually kills himself, I still don't see how anyone should be held "responsible". It's a really tragic situation, but just another example of today's America of just HAVING to find someone to blame.

I'm really uneasy with the idea of criminal charges for something like this. I do think there's likely civil recourse for intentional infliction of emotional distress. And I'm fine with that. Just the whole criminalizing speech thing is problematic except in the most extreme circumstances. I don't think that threshold is met here.

The only reason a child (aged 11) would elevate a dating relationship to the level that would push him to suicide is........terrible parenting.

If he had loving parents, he would have seen the loss of her as "sad" but would never overwhelm him.

Any parent who allows an 11 year old on social period is a terrible parent, period. You've torn up your dad card. 11 year olds do not possess the decision making ability to distinguish right from wrong, which is how we get awful situations like this.

It's not jumping to conclusions. It is the only plausible answer. He obviously could not imagine living another day without her. No child would hold any friend or boy/girl friend in the high of a regard if they had an appropriate level of parental attachment.

I feel really bad for the 11yr old boy. Not his fault at all.

The internet is putting kids in this weird limbo where they know things they shouldn't know at their age, but they still don't have the maturity to deal with those things.

Nah. It's quite simply biology. At that age your frontal lobe isn't fully developed and is unable to keep your limbic system in check (the part that's responsible for processing and controlling human emotions in the brain). Parenting only goes so far. It's also why kids, especially kids that age, have a hard time grasping the finality of suicide.

Now I don't disagree with the notion that social media at that age has starting exposing kids to new things that they may not be able to handle. But if you don't have a kid this day and age and don't have the experience of trying to keep them off social media, it's a little bit tougher than you think. These kids have grown up with this technology and are a hell of a lot slicker with it then a lot of adults.

More often than not in our modern society, 11 year olds are only in a boyfriend/ girlfriend type of relationship because of their moms. I have seen it to much over the last few years while my kids haved moved through that age range. Some 10-12 aged kid going on vacation with the others family, etc. and the FB photos of them all hugged up like adults in staged photos. At the beach, at the restaurant, at the amusement park, etc.. The mom induced romance goes on for a few months and then there is a falling out and one or the other kids and their friends start trashing each other on social media and the moms who fantasized about being besties as the kids grow older get offended and turn on each other like rabid dogs. I have seen it several times play out exactly like that.

My wife and I are like.... who the frick promotes and encourages 10-12 year olds to be in anything other than a platonic relationship? WTF are they doing taking the other kid on vacation with them and going the extra step and getting photos of them all lovey dovey in various settings? fricking FB and social media has truly turned many moms into competitive tramps willing to pimp out the innocence of youth for a few handfuls of likes and "awwww....how sweet" type comments. That shite ain't sweet! It's fricking demented and disturbing!
