Too bad many now think we're out-dated.

What I find interesting is Russia's loyalty to France, I know they had the French Revolution and all but this war breaking out wasn't That long after Napoleon tried to match his way through Russia

Here is my thought.

"You don't know how much you want one until you need one."

Fact.

France and Russia had to counter Germany and Austria-Hungary somehow.

True. The span of time between Napoleon invading Russia and Russia and France being allied in WWI was about the same amount of time between the start of WWI and today.

...so was WWII. Most wars, actually. Churchill called WWII "the unnecessary war."

I get a laugh out of armies riding into battle on horses thinking it would be fought like wars of the past. Ouch

Both sides actually kept pretty significant numbers of cavalry troops positioned behind the front. Virtually every offensive of either side on the Western Front had a goal of opening up a hole for the Cavalry to pour through into the enemy rear area. One notable exception was the German offensive at Verdun in 1916 where their goal was to simply "bleed France white".

I have come to the conclusion that the US really didn't need to get involved in WW1.

Long term, I think Britain is better off had it never participated either.

Thanks, Darth! I always enjoy your threads and posts on Military History. I like to think I've read (and retained!) quite a bit on the subject over the years, but your MH knowledge is practically encyclopedic. I'm astounded that a guy who isn't a History PhD knows as much detail as you do. It's pretty impressive!

Sidenote: With as many (actual) complete fricking assholes posting on the OT, I'm astounded by the negative attention you draw. I hope you don't ever let your "downvoters/stalkers" run you off of TD. You offer more substance than many...

The war was won because the US was pumping in 10,000 fresh troops a day. Without that the allies never make the decisive push at the end.

For those really interested in learning more, Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is doing a several part podcast series on WWI titles "Blueprint for Armageddon". He started last October and has over 10 hours of mostly chronological descriptions of the great one.

You're probably right. But after first killing so many Americans in the Lusitania sinking and then following that up with offering to help Mexico conquer most of the western US and on top of that resuming unrestricted sub warfare, the Germans all but assured the US would enter the war. Of those three things, the biggest was probably the deal Germany tried to make with Mexico. That one REALLY pissed folks over here off.

I agree 100%. Before the war the British was the most powerful and rich empire the world had ever known. After the war the Brits were up to their eyes in war debt to their former colony to the point she could no longer afford to maintain her empire. That fact more than anything is why Britain started shedding colonies after WWI.

Darth I like you but you are so wrong about this war.

Please read about the central bank of England role in that war and what was going on with Germanys economy

Great thread. I saw this, images in London of WWI area superimposed into modern times.

Then and now: German prisoners of war during the First World War on their way to Southend Pier in Essex in 1914 accompanied by guards and watched by locals

Old and new: A 'male' MKIV tank at the Lord Mayor's show in 1917 in London, and a man crossing the road outside the Bank of England earlier this month

Attention: King George V inspects troops in Bristol circa 1915, and taxis are seen lining up at Bristol Temple Meads railway station earlier this month

port: Wounded soldiers playing football outside Blenheim Palace around 1916 in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, and visitors this month standing on the South Lawn

Day out: Indian soldiers who were wounded fighting at Flanders recuperate on Bournemouth beach in 1917, while modern-day visitors are also seen there

Taking a look: British soldiers inspect a captured German place on Horse Guards Parade in London in 1915, which is also seen present-day with the London Eye

That dude is an amazing story teller. His ability to make empathetic connections to all of the historic actors is amazing! Ole Dan has gotten me through several runs and long days at the office.

Darth, great thread! I really enjoyed what you put together here. Entertaining and informative.
