100 Years Ago Today The World Went Mad

On July 28, 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. Thus began the seminal event of the 20th century and arguably the most transformative event since Europe emerged from the Dark Ages. The modern world in which we live is the offspring of this war. From many of the phrases we use, to many of the products we use, to the very worldviews many of us hold, so much of our world was born in the mud, blood, and shite of WWI.
This war would rage from the summer of 1914 until the fall of 1918. By the time the "11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" came around almost 40 million people were dead, all but one of the major Empires of Europe had collapsed and the one that still stood was virtually bankrupt. And even though the guns fell silent in 1918 and the politicians finalized the "peace" in 1919, WWI really did not end then but rather only took a long pause only to flare back up in 1939 and claim another 60 million people. And even today, WWI still lives on. From the battlefields of the Ukraine to the bloodbath across the Middle East, WWI is still killing people to this very day.
If you're not familiar with WWI, take a few moments and at least gain a little bit of an idea of what it was and what it means to our world today.

It really is hard to imagine a worse hell than trench warfare. frick all that noise.

World War II was terrible, but personally, I would never, ever want to fight in World War I, frick THAT. Sitting in a trench for weeks on end and knowing that getting out of it means your death is all but assured. To hell with that.

Watched something yesterday about the first chlorine gas attack by the Germans. Couldn't imagine a terror worse than sitting in a trench and everyone around you begins to suffocate out of the blue

Of course it was. So why exaggerate? Let the horror speak for itself.

40 million dead and not a single one named Adolf Hitler. Damn shame.

The reign of the tank begins....

Ww1 was started by bankers. Once the federal reserve was established along with the war tax collector IRS it was on and hasn't stopped since.

Although none of the "revolutionary" advancements proved to be decisive (Germany, for example, is generally have regarded to have "won" the air war), this war saw the first use (or in some cases, the first widespread use) of:
1. Tank
2. Airplane as a weapon
3. Chemical weapons
4. Over the horizon field artillery and guns
And while the machine gun or rapid firing gun had been used in prior conflicts, the widespread use during this war was a decisive factor in both the trench becoming dominant and the nature of the war being, for the most part stalemate/war of attrition.
The innovations, tactics and operational art required to restore mobility - in many ways using the same weapons of this war would require another 20 years or so to mature - just in time for the "Second World War", or, as some call it - The Great War, Part 2.

I see your mystery downvoter is up early this morning, Darth.
I need to read up more on WWI. There is such a plethora of info available for WWII, I've never read very much into WWI other than the use of chemical weapons.

Something doesn't look quite right in that pic, Darth. I mean, the head/skull is totally decomposed yet the hands look fine...

There is a really good article in this month's National Geographic about the tunnels that still exist under the old battlefields.
The people that own the land have done their best to preserve them because they're still full of regular items used and the walls contain a bunch of carvings made by the soldiers from both sides.
