I'm not sure if it'a available on audiobook format or not but I think a great book that covers the overall conflict from start to finish is "The First World War - A Complete History" by Martin Gilbert. I've got a very old and battered hardback copy sitting on my desk. It goes somewhat into detail but not too deep that would require a deep knowledge of that time to understand. For me I wish it had more detail, but it's still a good read.

Took some courses on international relations that covered the era to some extent, so I'm thinking I'd be considered "intermediate" but not advanced on the time period

You read the "Guns of August"?

Down load Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcasts. Perfect for what you want to do.
