Does anyone know of any hard facts supporting a claim of a Pvt. Henry Tandey, who supposedly came face to face with a young Adolf Hitler on the battlefield, had him in his rifle sights, and let him live?
I recently saw this event covered in the History Channel's series "World At War". They presented it as being fact. I don't think there's ever been anything presented as concrete proof though

Thanks for posting Darth_Vader. Great stuff.
Have to throw this in here.
What an incredible story of bravery.

The world was already mad before WWI

Notice the patch he's wearing? That's the old original 82nd Infantry division patch which in WWII was re-designated the 82nd Airborne Division. This is how most people know this patch....

Paratrooper to the core of my being brother.
We had a few more years to go before we came into being. On the other hand, the DAT was born in this war.
As a point for all of my RA brethren, both the 82nd and 101st by lineage are Army Reserve divisions.
Enjoy that fact!

As the story goes, Hitler saw a newspaper article about Tandey being awarded the Victoria Cross, recognized him from their "encounter", and kept the clipping in his office. That'd be pretty crazy if true

A couple of books worth reading that provide interesting insight into WWI;
Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves
The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig (English translation)

I think its is probably true. It's just one of those things there is no way to actually prove.

I don't think anyone will forget the importance of James Cole in the Great War.

It took me a minute to get that.

Makes sense, in a convoluted way. I think I (many of us) lack understanding of European boundaries/alliances from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

If this helps, here's what the map of Europe looked like 100 years ago today...
(Notice that in 1914, Italy was actually allied with Germany & Austria. While Germany honored it's treaty obligations to Austria, Italy didn't. Instead Italy stayed on the sideline at the start and watched to see which side would come out on top. It was not until May 1915 that Italy would enter the war. But instead of standing with it's treaty allies, it instead went to war against them on the side of Britain, France, and Russia.)

I want to thank you for reminding some people that read this board that:
A) Religion isn't the driving factor behind all Wars
B) There were wars and fighting long before Israel was established in 1948

You're welcome. And you're correct. In fact if you add up all the wars, conflicts, and other problems from the 20th century, you'll see that politics killed far more people than any religion could ever hope to kill.
