I think the point is to not make any dumb grand declarations like "our country is so fricked" based off 1 article with half the story missing

It was pretty obvious reading the original story that there was a LOT of missing information.

While I did admittedly fall for the OP article, this is why I try to find some local discussion group when I see stories like this.

No one is saying not to believe anything whatsoever. We're saying be skeptical when an article comes out with a link to a GoFundMe because it's probably biased as hell.

A kid did not get charged with assault because of the events of a normal game of dodgeball. It sounds like it was a game where balls are thrown in the air while standing in a circle and the kid got mad and chunked a ball at the other kids head. And this was after some time of bullying that kid.

And jumped to a conclusion of which side you want to believe despite having no evidence either way.

But what they were playing doesn’t even matter. What matters is it’s fricking stupid to charge a 10 year old with assault for hitting a kid in the head on the playground with a ball. There are ways to discipline and punish a 10 year old. This ain’t it.

This is typical click-bait outrage.

Everyone is on one side, then weeks later more details come out and we realize that maybe the original scenario wasn’t as retarded as we thought.

And, almost always, it revolves around identity politics.

This all happened after the kid had already been sat down by the principal for being a little shite.

Because it requires us to suspend common sense.

Well you frame it that way, sure. When you get some actual context, not so much.

of course it does as it completely changes the story

while I agree I'm not for charging a 10 year old with assault, it certainly changes the story enough for at least a debate and not the absurdity presented in the OP

Those methods were apparently tried over a period of time of cyber bullying which escalated to events at school. The mom of the bullied kid tried to fix it. After the latest event, police tried to mediate yet the mom of the bully didn't cooperate.

Whether or not that is true is one thing, but I'm inclined to believe the words of someone who is local to the area over a Cbs article written about a GoFundMe page.

Gets on me for not being skeptical of the original story then goes on to post a paragraph where you totally believe the other parent’s version of events because someone posted something they read on reddit. Give me a break.

Better than jumping to a conclusion with only half of the info, like you.

Yeah man. It definitely sounds like he's getting a ton of discipline at home.

do we know this?

I’m as old school as anyone. But when we were kids we played hard as hell. But we also didn’t beat down weaker kids be berating them.

We also understood cause and effect and wouldn’t have nailed someone in the face from point blank range w a basketball or heavier ball. We would’ve known it could injure our friends, not a whelp, or a “frog”, or a dead leg, but an injury similar to punching our playmate.

I just think kids nowadays have so little exposure to controlling their emotions and assessing the potential results of their actions.

Let me ask you something:

Given the fact that the DA felt there was enough to charge a 10 year old with assault, which side of the story seems more plausible?

Admittedly I didn't even read the article, just the quoted parts on the first page of the thread. So maybe this particular incident doesn't mean we could be fricked.

But I do stand my comments that if things continue down the current path, we may see another Civil War in our lifetimes.

During baseball practice indoors, we used to trap the Freshman in the corner and blast him with tennis balls from the pitching machine. We only had one frosh on varsity. I'm not sure any lessons were learned, but it was fun.

Just expel the kid. I know they don't really do that anymore but it's time they started

We know the DA found enough evidence and corroboration of the story to charge the kid with assault.

This is where common sense should tell you which side of the story is closer to the truth.

Well, just as we should be skeptical of the honestly of the media today, same goes for a lot of government officials. More and more we see stupid shite like this in today’s hypersensitive “zero tolerance” society.

There was a time where I’d not believe a DA would bring a crazy charge like this. But now? Yeah, it’s possible.
