I just glanced at the specific wallethub article. These surveys from wallet hub always seem like they need closer looks at their definitions on what’s specifically being compared, weighting of factors, and so on. They seem to have stopped including the specific numbers to import yourself and just link to videos now.

The proportion of fed money included in state’s revenue can be affected by states with varying levels of revenue and govt programs to begin with. I am also not sure how fed money and federal mandates for that money are handled. Yet the state govt score is weighted 50% of the total score.

Just using “dependency” implies that the states are milking the feds for their own needs that they can’t pay themselves, but I don’t think thats always the case.

These studies seem more about getting wallethub’s name out there in conversations.

2. Kentucky Buildings in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville, Kentucky. Alexey Stiop/Shutterstock State residents' dependency rank: 5 State government's dependency rank: 7 Thanks to the $3.45 in federal funding the state receives for every $1 residents pay in taxes, Kentucky was found to be the second-most federally dependent state. Another large contributor was that 44% of Kentucky's revenue consisted of federal funding.

This actually tracks.

40% of vehicles in Lexington traffic are in no hurry to get anywhere. It is social security and welfare recipients “Sunday driving” each day of the week from 8 am - 8 pm. No chance they are contributing to our society.

The one thing I miss about Baton Rouge traffic is that it is 90% speed demons when the light turns green (in the rare instances when traffic actually moved) as if each cars bumpers were tied to each other. Drivers up here leave 20 car length gaps when flowing through lights. So I still have blood boiling road rage here, it’s just no longer aimed at the BR poors driving rusted hunks of shite.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I need an outlet to vent.

Should be one of the richest states in the country with natural resources, access to waterways and the Gulf and the infrastructure in place.

Politicians starting with Huey P have raped and pillaged Louisiana's for generations.

We should be Texas lite at the very worst. Nope.... you can't hate politicians enough.

Now let’s ask what do all those states have in common that other states don’t? I’ll give you a hint, a certain race of people that live off the government.

In eastern KY it’s mostly white people in depressed coal towns.

Louisville on the other hand is probably a bunch of different races of people.

Social security recipients have contributed to society and are likely still paying taxes.

If social security and regular Medicare are included in the federal funding used in a state’s calculation it just chips more away from the article’s purpose of pointing out dependence on federal revenue.

Social security/medicare and any other federal funding that is ultimately going to a federal mandated program or projects above what the state would normally do should be excluded.

Does federal funding include EIC and other tax credits? Are grants allocated where they are ultimately spent for taxpayer rankings (like an NGO spending across multiple states) and does it include the federal spending to upkeep federally own land in the state?

Federal jobs part of calculation is listed as “Share of Federal Jobs” not salaries.

quote:

State Residents’ Dependency – Total Points: 50

Return on Taxes Paid to the Federal Government: Triple Weight (~37.50 Points) Note: This metric was calculated by dividing federal funding in U.S. dollars by IRS collections in U.S. dollars.

Share of Federal Jobs: Full Weight (~12.50 Points)

State Government’s Dependency – Total Points: 50

Federal Funding as a Share of State Revenue: Full Weight (~50.00 Points)
Note: This metric reflects the proportion of state revenue that comes from the federal government in the form of intergovernmental aid in 2023.

I think its 80%. Drives me mad, and of course most of them are in the passing lane.
