Can't say I disagree. Maybe Shanle isn't all that bad, just the scheme Gregg Williams ran made everyone look worse than they appeared.

disgaree. before GW, our defense was turrible, but it was boring-turrible. At leasy GW mixed it up and brought some prssure packages.

The one thing that has not changed, is that before GW, no one could win the 1 on 1 matchups and get pressure. That problem persists. If GW couldnt get these guys to collapse the pocket, id be shocked if anyone can.

I guess what im saying is, dont expect Will Smith (and others) to have a 15 sack season due to the change in DC.

That's the point. There was no mixing it up. You knew at least half of the snaps were going to be blitzes and her NEVER disguised them. A 4 year old could recognize them from a mile away.

On the Vernon Davis touchdown, he was just standing there not guarding anyone, not watching the QB, not doing anything.

Everyone talks about blitzing and getting sacks. Sometimes the defense has to have coverage sacks. If the QB wasn't sacked within 2 secs, the pass was normally completed. Teams threw hot routes all game, long and we never could jump the slants. Sometimes over blitzing(Greg Williams) can be just as bad as under blitzing(Gary Gibbs).

Williams defense with the right players could work, just it never really did. I will always be thankful for Williams, it was just time for him to go

In the NFL it doesnt take long for teams to figure you out, and dominate your weakness. Williams just never changed his scheme or even tried to mix it up.

Shanle on the other hand is just downright bad. He isnt NFL talent anymore and needs to make like cow shite.

This.

I think he was pissed off last year that he couldn't be as aggressive as he wanted to be. I think he was trying to capture that 09 magic this year, seeing as the offense was playing lights out.

Problem was the passrush wasn't working and we didn't have one of the best ballhawking safeties of all time on the field. So he blitz and blitz into oblivion. It's like the elusive turnover started to drive him mad.

I'm just glad the mad man is gone.

but shanle was awesome in gary gibbs defense so he's obviously got a point

I said this in 2009..he didnt seem to fit the scheme we were playing..a lot of the players didnt but most of them didnt show as much as Shanle...I thought he should have been gone after the SB season..but I guess its harder to find quality LB's nowadays...

made me think of how Payton is sometimes described as a mad scientist of play design...

there's a fine balance where the two work, too much mad or too much scientist both fail. GW just went a little too much Mr. Hyde

That isn't in his Twitter feed. It's possible that he deleted it, but I have searched and can find nothing like that repeated anywhere. Where's your evidence that Shanle said that? Because I don't think that he did.

GW seemed to have the philosophy of "if it isn't working, just do more of it until it does."

Williams defenses seem to regress year after year. Not just with the Saints.

O Rly i told you before the season that the saints defense will never allow the saints to win another superbowl. Unless we load up on defense with elite talent. Every year will hinge on Brees playing lights out.

don't just blame shan. the defense as a whole could not tackle this year. williams should not have relied on jenkins to guard davis one on one so much as he could not do the job, and as for roll tide roland harper he missed a tackle at the saints 40 on that last drive.
