Would you trade 14, 45, and Penning to move up to 5 for Alt?

This was proposed by some national guy whose name I can't remember, but at least 2 of the local Baton Rouge 104.5 shows cited yesterday. My 1st thought was that's ridiculous, the Chargers would never do that. That was my 2nd thought, too.
But after it was brought up a 3rd time, I started actually thinking about it for a bit. Let's just concede for this hypothetical that the Chargers would entertain it, that the national guy who wrote it/mocked it has some sort of intel. Maybe Harbaugh wants to bring in more of his guys and they really value that pick at 45 and think there's not that big a difference between who they could get at 14 than who they could get at 5 at whatever position they're eyeing. I'm not sure if they totally cleaned house, but maybe they have some scouts still on staff who were also high on Penning and think they could work with him. Or think he could be a starting guard in their new system. Whatever. Let's forget about the seemingly ridiculousness that it would be on their part. Would you do it?
Is Alt ranked so much higher on our board that moving up to get him is worth trading a (hopefully) 1st year starter that you could get at 45? Worth giving up on Penning at least being a depth piece on the OL on a rookie deal for at least 2 more years? The more I thought about it, the more I thought it's the Saints who probably shouldn't do it.
But then my final thought was that if you're going to move up to 5, why not just take a QB, assuming one is still there you like. Does it really make sense to move up into the top 5 for any other position? I don't buy into the thinking that you're paying Carr $40 million, so you have to start him. You're paying him that anyway, who cares if he starts or holds a clipboard. If the new offensive staff doesn't think he's the guy, then he's not the guy. We're gonna be eating salary cap shite for the next couple of years anyway. I'd rather eat shite with the QB I like on the team and playing rather than playing a guy that's not "the guy." Even if he's the most expensive backup in NFL history.

Trading up in the first round always works out great for the Saints.

If Penning is even salvageable as a Guard or maybe just a late bloomer as a Tackle
Your giving up potentially 3 starters to fill one need
We have too many holes to do this and for it to make any sense for us

Ask yourself…….”Is offensive tackle the only glaring need for this franchise?” You’ll have your answer.

I would stay put at 14 and 45. Really need to hit on these first two. What I am afraid of is that teams will probably call and try and bait the Saints into trading up since they know that that is their tendency.

While I don’t expect this to happen because there will be some solid OTs at 14, your assumption on the trade to move from 14 to 5 values Penning as a late 4th rounder. That part is reasonable close.

No. We need to hold on to our picks for once and try to fill all of our team needs. Why are this organization and its fans so obsessed with trading away all of our draft picks and wasting them every year?
Scouting is not an exact science. Alt could very well be a bust like Penning, and then we’ll be even further in the hole.

If Alt is as good as everyone says and is your LT for the next 13 years you won’t give a shite or remember what they gave up.
I honestly don’t care anymore about this particular team “filling needs” because it doesn’t matter.
They won’t be good. They won’t be good the year after. When this team is good again, Allen won’t be the Coach and Carr won’t be the QB.
We need TALENT. Real, actual, talent.

How do you know Fashanu will be there?

I don't but I'd rather risk that or make a much smaller trade up for him than what it would have to be for Alt.

1) The Saints have not made this trade
2) It was not my original idea or scenario--it was some national guy's
3) I said in the OP that I wouldn't do it
4) Nobody on planet earth is obsessed with "wasting" draft picks. There are just different philosophies on how best to "use" them.
I mainly started this thread because I'm not a draft expert, but even less of an expert on evaluating offensive tackles and wondered just how much better Alt is supposed to be than the next tier. It seems like he is not just the consensus #1 tackle, but the undisputed #1 tackle. Then a gap and then a group of about 5 with different people favoring different guys. I just don't know how big that gap is and how much of a sure thing Alt is. In as much as there can be a sure thing in an NFL Draft.

Trading up in the first round always works out great for the Saints.
Still early but looks like we blew our high 2nd round pick last year. And Penning was benched. So unless they both make a dramatic jump, not sure we lost much.
I’d be drafting Nabors, not Alt.
And Loomis needs to trade down, this team has holes everywhere.

What is it about Penning that is holding him back the most? Footwork?
We know he's not afraid to mix it up and go after people physically.
He had a hard time staying healthy his first year but health wasn't a concern last year he just straight up didn't play after I think that first Tampa game.

Just take Fashanu
I’d take him if there, if not take the Washington Tackle. I think one of the two will be there, and both can play LT. Move Penning full time to left guard. Hurst can back up Ram if he can’t go.

I rather trade down , but stay in late teens or early 20's pick and try to accumulate a 3rd or 4th round pick.
You can still get a tackle and gain extra pick.
I think that Arizona, Duke or BYU tackle would still be there.
We have an aging roster and I rather use our picks to grab some young backups.
Hopefully some of those guys stick on the roster

Considering what draft choices we have now.. That is way too much for the higher draft picks we have.. Deal those 5th rounders to see if we can move into the lower 3rd or higher 4th...
If we don't pick an OT in the first then see about moving up in the 2nd for Graham Barton.

We need to be trading down. There isn't anyone besides one of the top 2 qbs trading up for.
