my guess would be unless someone comes knocking with a 2nd, they'll try and showcase him this preseason and wait for a QB desperate team to pay up.

I just don’t see the 9ers moving him. Purdy has looked good but he is Mr. Irrelevant and Lance was traded up at the top of the draft for. As mediocre/bad as he has looked in limited play time I don’t think we’ve seen enough other than the fact that he can’t seem to stay healthy

If he is deemed 'not crazy' then sure.

Low 3rd, sure.

High 3rd, no. You can get some damn elite talent with that

No I have doubts if the guy can even play qb successfully in the nfl

We have no idea.

If the 9ers are REALLY willing to trade him for a 3rd rounder after giving up 3 first rounders for him 2 years ago that’s probably a HUGE red flag.

If I knew we were going to pick a quarterback with that third rounder then yes I would rather have Trey Lance.

It beats the hell out of trading a second for Derek Carr.

But I think the niners would be stupid to not at least have Lance and Purdy battle it out in camp next year. Regardless of how far they go in the playoffs.

For a 3rd rounder, I would take that chance.

Yeah, I don’t see any way they move on from him this year. We’ve seen guys like Purdy go on a nice run early only to fizzle out. They’ve just invested too many resources to give up on him so early. They’re gonna need a backup regardless.

And like St. Aug said, if Shannahan is ready to give up on him after year 2 and doesn’t think he can do anything with him, that’s a HUGE red flag.

Only way I see it is if Philly exposes Purdy a bit Sunday, they get housed by the Eagles, and wind up signing Brady for a year or 2 to let Purdy get a little more seasoning. Probably not keeping 3 QBs. Even then, I’d let them battle it out this off-season for the 2 job.

Wasn’t Purdy like a 4 year starter? He’s got them to the NFC championship game after winning a bunch of games down the stretch. He’s on the lowest of the low rookie scale contracts. He doesn’t need seasoning. He needs first team reps in the off-season and preseason to show he can be the man. His time is now.

I’m sure they want to keep Lance as insurance and maybe rehab his value some to get more in a trade. He’s also on his rookie deal, so they can be picky.

It might not be shanny giving up, but with Lance already being raw coming out and now going into season 3 with only a handful of starts under his belt, his development may no longer fit their window

The other thing to consider is that with the unknown in this case (only 2 years), they may get more value now (3rd rounder) than next year 6th or 7th if at all.

It is the sunk cost fallacy for many in this discussion, and being able to get around that is what makes most successful business people. It's not being perfect at making decisions, it is knowing when to cut bait and try something else. They don't dig themselves deeper based on previous mistakes. They just move on and get what they can.

This is the issue for the Saints, ironically. They fell into the sunk cost fallacy multiple times with Payton and Loomis and it has bit them in the arse and hamstrung the team at times.

For a 3rd or 4th, you definitely take Lance.

As opposed to all 3 rounds picks that are completely proven?

I’m pretty shocked at the amount of people that oppose giving up a fricking 3rd rounder for the guy
