No. Everything about this dude is based on limited playing time in FCS play. Now he’s had a major injury and his mobility may never be the same.

Trey Lance has the tough break of being probably a good player drafted way too high, then the added burden of immediately getting hurt. He'll need to be traded for 3rd round and up to relieve those expectations.
This has the potential to be like when Kwame Brown got picked first and then had a successful but not outstanding career, but everyone called him a bust because of when he got picked.

if they were asking for a first or even 2nd I get the reservations....for a 3rd? I mean come on, he's a better prospect and 3 years younger than Hooker

Which is why the price tag is "no more than a 3rd". His cap hit would be ~$3.7M in 2023 & ~$5.3M in 2024, and you have the 5th year option available. IMO, definitely worth considering for a low value pick; especially if the team is getting picks in return for Payton.
But, as another poster pointed out; would not touch him if my plan is to roll with Pete at OC. Need a more innovative OC that knows how to call plays to players' strengths.

now the offense having to be completely retooled is a fair point but that needs to happen regardless. Hoping Pete goes with Sean wherever he ends up and the team knows this so they're sparing a long time guy from being fired. Probably wishful thinking though

Don’t get me wrong, we’ve thrown away picks on some dumb players over the years. I’m not completely opposed.
I’d assume we’d need to taylor an offense to a more mobile qb to get the most out of his cheap 3 years. Our roster already kind of in a state of flux. Just seems we’d have to be building in a different direction. But honestly I can’t tell you the type of direction we’re currently building in

Of course I’d give it up. The ceiling is through the roof and you don’t know what he is yet. He was raw and Shanahan would have got him to the next level. The only reason why i think it’s a waste is you’re gonna rely on Carmichael to develop him? And Allen? Lol. Don’t waste his time or talent
