Loser: Saints gave up way too much trading up for non-QB
When the New Orleans Saints pulled off a huge trade with the Green Bay Packers that cost them a ton of draft capital to move up from 27 to 14, everyone assumed it was for a quarterback. Everyone was expecting it to be Lamar Jackson, which would have set off some incredible reactions in a positive way. Well actually…
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge Marcus Davenport fan. But to give up what the Saints gave up and not draft the future successor to Drew Brees was just folly, and the overwhelming majority seems to agree on this point.
Davenport has the physical tools to become a star, but this draft pick is all about projection and potential, rather than anything else. We highlighted Davenport as one of the riskiest draft picks this year, simply because he wasn’t able to produce at a high level, even going up against lower-level competition in Conference USA.

I trust Ireland more than any analyst at this point.
It's steep, but let's support MD and see what happens.

So this trade woupd have been a good trade if we moved up to get a guy that wouldn't even play for 2 years? But moving up to improve our biggest weakness is somehow bad? Media just loves to talk about the next guy. They want teams wuth aging QBs to draft QBs early so bad.

Absolutely love this pick. If this guy lives up to his potential he's in the mold of a Demarcus Ware. At the end of his career, if someone had given up a 1st round pick for D. Ware do you think anyone would remember that 1st round pick? No. We clearly think we will make another legitimate run this year. Two back end 1st round picks + a 5th for a possible decade long bookend, not too much at all. Shortsighted people are morons. I love this pick. Our front office did their homework on this guy, they know the type of player they moved up for.

If he ends up being a Ziggy Ansah type, he will be totally worth it. Anything short and I think he isn't worth using two first rounders on him.

I like Davenport. He has a chance to be a stud——that said so should every other 1st round pick.
We need an impact player on D that can get to the passer. You can make the case that athletically Davenport is the best edge rusher in the draft. However if you look at consistently producing even in a non power conf his production doesn’t meet his measurables.
It’s a risky pick. But to perhaps get Jordan with a few less double teams it’s a risk worth taking.
We did give up too much. Davenport is a reach in terms of value. But if you look at who went after our pick to me the only guys on D I think could have really helped us were Evans and Taven Bryan (who went 29th). But Bryan has issues too.

Look, I agree with the premise of your post, but I just want you to think about this: people say stuff like this in every draft. People said this when we took Sullivan. 2 1st round picks for a possible 10 year dominant DT!

I think it's pretty obvious the the Saints liked Davenport more than most/all of the other teams.
I don't think Saints fans should have to pretend that this is a no-brainer decision and that only idiots would suggest otherwise. They shouldn't pretend that the price wasn't steep.
The company line should be that, the Saints were in love with Davenport, and this steep price was the only way they could get him on the team. And, despite the price, they felt he was worth it.
