Why this team isn't selling everything but the furniture is a mystery.

They need a hard reset. Full Madden purge. Get rid of every one that's a tradeable asset. Take good value, don't worry about best value. Bundle assets if necessary to wipe years away. This is about clearing your books.

Dump Carr at first opportunity. Stop extending people.

Invest in your scouting department and hire a competent GM.

This is the way.

Problem is the way the contracts are structured, damn near anyone worth more than a 7th rounder would have a negative impact on the cap for 2024 & 2025.

And that is looking over the fact that Mickey would have to finally admit this team is a failure, which would require him to eat crow with his statements the past few weeks

because if you trade them, even with the draft capitol, you have no money to sigh pieces you do ultimately need.

It doesn’t do any good to sign anyone good until 2026 anyway. Anyone signed will be a waste of resources until 2 years from now.

I get it but so what? Have an entire roster full of vet minimums if you have to.

I don't think some of you folks understand...we're in such a bad position it's like being an expansion franchise.

It would be an upgrade over our current cap situation.

We get it, the problem is the cap situation is so atrocious that they would be at risk of the league stepping in and forcing contract changes (which I’m sure comes with some sort of penalty). They are already $80+M over the cap next year. Most of the players that would garner any sort of assets have large cap hit next year that would either lock in those numbers or would make the cap hit larger. And this in turn would make it a lot more difficult for Loomis to get the team cap complaint by mid March without pulling some serious shenanigans.

You don’t make moves, you lose the opportunity to add some draft capital, but you allow the team to let some of these aging contracts go away naturally by 2026

Misspelled “Cut”.

Cap hit be damned.

From PFT:

“Saints quarterback Derek Carr can do something on Sunday that no quarterback in NFL history has ever done: Lose to 31 different teams.

Carr and the Saints play the Panthers on Sunday, and Carolina is one of just two NFL franchises that Carr has never lost to. If the Saints lose, Carr will be the first starting quarterback to have losses to 31 different NFL franchises.

The other team Carr has never lost to is the Raiders, the team he played most of his career for. The Saints play the Raiders in Week 17, so Carr has a chance to become the first quarterback to lose to all 32 NFL franchises. Carr’s overall career record as a starting quarterback is 74-90 in the regular season and 0-1 in the preseason.

Currently, Carr is one of 10 quarterbacks in NFL history who have lost to 30 teams. The others are Drew Bledsoe, Brett Favre, Jon Kitna, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselbeck, Alex Smith, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan.”

because as you have seen so far this year, depth is an issue - so you trade folks now, that cap hit us next year - how do we replace them to have depth if we are even worse off on cap space than now?

Because we still have to be compliant with the NFL salary cap. Despite what this board liked to believe, the cap does in fact matter.

Our current cap situation means we aren’t ALLOWED to just cut/trade much of our roster as the hits to the cap would have us so far out of compliance even a roster of league minimum players would not be possible.

This post is dumb. Did you read your post of the other guys he's tied with? That group isn't just terrible players

Correct. Is actually a testament to a QBs longevity (and starting in both AFC and NFC) on this league to make this list. If you’re critical of Carr, you need to disparage Brees as well.

And what would they do about it? They aren’t going to not let the Saints sit out the season. It behooves us to go 0-17 next year and the year after.

The message to everyone in the saints organization should be very clear ... the cap strategy in use is not sustainable and not conducive to rebuilding the franchise to a competitive team. Its time to pull the band aid off and pay the piper.

Extending aging player contracts because their cap hit is too big compounds the problem. They not only take up cap but they take up roster spots for the only reason being their cap hit.

Take the cap hit, pay the piper, and play next year with rookie contracts and i year scrub contracts.

This is brutal. Loomis seems to believe that this division is so bad, that it is worth trying to make the playoffs and making that money.

Real life tells you that you better have a 2-3 year plan for cutting/trading/releasing players to get the cap situation under control.
