Why does our draft strategy leave so much to be desired?

We always trade all of our picks away. Will we ever have a full lineup of draft picks? You’re supposed to build your team of the future with your draft and acquire a bunch of of players at a low cost. Free agency is for filling in the final holes on your team.

We should adopt the New England Patriots’ strategy and a accumulate draft picks.

I like it.
Keep whining if it makes you feel better though.

Believe it or not, New England misses a lot of their picks. They get a ton of low risk high reward free agents though

To be honest, all I care about is winning the super bowl this year. Once brees retires we gonna drop off no matter how many picks we have.

it's a pretty good strategy, but we would have beat them in the SB this year, had it not been for the debacle in the NFCCG... so our strategy, despite it not being ideal, hasn't led us to doom yet, so i'm gonna keep trusting in the process...

It seems to have worked out pretty damn well with only 8 losses the past 2 years and very deep rosters

You just dont like how it's done despite its success

Someone get Mickey on the phone. Cbree has a thing or 2 to teach em. Superbowl ring be damned, cbree here to tell you what you're "supposed" to do.

The draft leaves alot to be desired for you because you are a moron, mystery solved.

The Saints have been drafting their asses off the past few years. What in the actual frick are you bitching about? Should have been in the Super Bowl last year with lots of major contribution from guys drafted here.

Our teams are at almost opposite ends of the draft spectrum. Both have been very successful but for different reasons.

Our goal is largely to target specific players that fit what we want to do or that we have a vision for. To do this we often trade up to target these specific players we have a conviction on. Way more often than not these trades work.

I feel we actually have less success overall standing pat and letting it come to us (less, not none; we're still fairly successful trade up or not).

In short: fewer shots but very specific players.

NE instead chooses to gather up a ton of shots, and while they do pick good players their success rate has been below league average. Instead of getting specific players they tend to go BPA and/or take players who are more versatile.

Often these versatile players tend to be good at nothing so they wind up busting out. Or their BPA turns out to be a dud. Whoever is evaluating talent in NE doesn't do a very good job, but that's made up in number of picks.

In short: a ton of shots with a low rate of success targeting BPA and versatility.

Both teams have had success in the draft, but we have a MUCH higher rate of success because we hit more often on fewer picks.

There was a run of a few bad drafts, but by and large we have hit way more often than not, especially early. VERY few missed in the top 3 rounds.

Low cost? We are never in salary cap trouble, what are you talking about? Micky knows what's up.

It’s not desired to some fans because they like hearing their team’s name called and the commentators gushing over their picks. We have one of the best rosters in the league. We don’t have a lot of room. Heck we couldn’t keep most of our draft last year because of the lack of room on the roster and every drafted player that we let go got picked up by another team. People bitched about those picks too at the time of the draft and we really did well. People, were, really, seriously bitching about taking a safety with our 6th round pick. Some fans just have a poor drafting IQ.

We are drafting well. We don’t need 20 picks. As a result of drafting well, our roster is deep and stable. Maybe people should trust what we are doing, building, and achieving in the draft and on the field.

eh, i dont like mortgaging future picks but all they gave up this year was our 2020 2nd rounder so next years draft is nearly intact which is rare for us as of late.

in years past we sucked at drafting so it hurt worse but the last few years we are drafting very well and making good picks so it has been working out which softens the blow of losing future picks.

well knock on wood anyway, because they may not be done so anything might happen before next years draft

New England has also benefited from a shitty division forever.

The Saints have an extremely deep and talented roster it makes no sense to draft seven guys just to draft seven guys. It isn’t easy to make the team. The Saints identifying guys with a high likelihood of making the team is a good strategy.

It’s fun now and that’s all that really matters as long as Drew is around.

Once he is gone you will feel it a lot more, just as they did the few years they keep doing the same thing with the check book. It will catch up to them

I like to play this game called name all the good QBs that played in Brady's division since he's started.

We've had Ryan since 2008 and Cam since 2011, both MVPs. Cam is up and down but still a great player (shitty person but not our problem).
