Why did Spagnuolo not Work out with saints?

Yet he is an elite coordinator everywhere else. Should he have gotten more time in New Orleans?

SP replaced him with Rob Ryan lol

Spags got better over time being around better coaches.

Spags is thankful the Saints fired him. Trust me.

It's a combination of things. He came to a team with a HC that was suspended, so it was in a bad state of disorganization and chaos. He had players that didn't really fit his scheme, and when Payton came back he cut the cord quickly to make things right. I don't think it was a case of Spags being a bad DC; he had the Giants dominating before coming here. I think it was simply terrible timing and a HC needing to make some amends and make a statement.

Spags system is fully dependent on the front 4 being able to consistently put pressure on the QB & stop the run. He had that & more with the Giants & has that now with the Chiefs. He had none of that in his year with the Saints.

Rob Ryan did fine until Sean tried to make us Seattle. They were ranked 4th year 1 under him

More than just that I would say it requires solid & efficient play all around by the defense. You are correct about relying on the front 4 not blitzing unless necessary, but that also requires solid LB & DB play.
DL had subpar sack numbers (30, t25th) Cam Jordan=8, Will Smith=6, Jr Galette=5 leading the pack.
LB had Jonathan Vilma only viable NFL starter, the rest were Curtis Lofton, Scott Shanle, David Hawthorne, Jonathan Casillas, Martez Wilson, Ramon Humber & Will Herring
DB had Jabari Greer as only viable starter, with Patrick Robinson (not a boundary CB) & Johnny Patrick as the other 2 main CBs
S was terrible with Roman Harper, Isa Abdul-Quddus and Rafael Bush
All of that combined for us to be ranked 31st against the pass & 32nd against the run. I remembered us being bad against the run, but didn't remember being dead last.
Broderick Bunkley & David Hawthorne were signed to terrible overpriced contracts from the start, and they laid an absolute egg here.
Martez Wilson (Spags fault) was used out of position and not enough on the edge to rush passer
Akiem Hicks (Spags fault) was used out of position as a 4-3 DE instead of a 3-tech
Sedrick Ellis started all 16 games but didn't do much of anything that year. That was the end of his contract and the last he ever played football so he was either playing injured or his head/heart was out of football that season

What do you mean by that?

Supposedly he wanted scheme similar to what the legion of boom was.
In reality he was probably micromanaging Ryan so he wouldnt get suspended again

Talent and he wasn't given enough time to build a D
Payton was pretty bad in those days. He got Rob Ryan and then told him after a year to run the Seattle cover 3, and even forced Jarius Byrd into the mix.

He doesn't really have that with the Chiefs
They have 1 legit pass rusher in Jones and they're not that good against the run (largely due to Jones).
The Chiefs' D wasn't that great when he was hired and they built that team from the secondary forwards. They've jetitisoned the high priced edge Clark, too.

This has to be it. They went and got Browner, too if I am not mistaken. They also drafted a 6'3" corner that sucked balls. It was a weird time coming off of a top 5 defense.

Well Rob Ryan had a history of great year 1s and then fading, but yeah Payton came in one day and tried to completely change everything, even going from a 3-man front to a 4-man front.
There is a reason Jarius Byrd was an absolute failure.
Payton was legit insane back in those days.

In 2012, the Saints allowed the most yards for a season of any defense in NFL history en route to finishing 7–9 and missing the playoffs for the first time in four years.
2012 was the suspension year for CSP. IMO Spags came into a dysfunctional time in the Saints Brees/Payton era. Both Dennis Allen and Aaron Kromer were acting head coaches at various points in the season. (That in itself was dysfunctional, just pick a guy and go with it) This time frame could very well have been the start to the locker room problems that CSP had to address a few season later by shipping off players like Junior Galette, Brandan Cooks, Darren Sproles, Jimmy Graham, Malcolm Jenkins, Kelly Stills.
Anyway, Spagnola only got 1 year to do something and IMO it wasn't a fair shot because of the dysfunction going on at the time, but the fact of that second quote was going to be hard to overlook. Especially 3 years removed from the super bowl.

Karalaftis just hung 10.5 sacks as a 23 year old. Dude is legit

I remember the Superdome would set off a siren on 3rd down to let us know Rob Ryan was about to blow this call. Opponents got the 1st all the time.

because that was the year payton was suspended for and Spagnuolo took his pay and just mailed it in not even trying.
thats why the first thing payton did after coming back was to fire his lazy arse for not even trying to do his job
