Spags would’ve been great for the saints if he coaching the team 2016-2020. That’s probably the best D front the saints have had since the early 2000’s

Somehow I really dislike the man, and I barely even watch the Saints anymore. It's kind of like John McCain. He sucked so long, I don't even remember how it started.
If he had a "scheme" that couldn't be changed to suit the actual personnel available, then that immediately puts him in the bottom half of NFL coaches IMO. You don't win at that level by executing a scheme. That's most obvious on offense, but it's true on defense, too.
Supposedly when Payton came back, the players started coming to him with tragicomic stories about Spags. It wasn't just a matter of trying to "put things right" in a hurry.
I don't know specifics, but it sounded like Lou Holtz asking which coach had to buy the plane tickets when he coached the Jets, or Ellis Johnson trying to ban "Walkmans" at USM. He did or said something that made the players think he was an arse.

Payton was legit insane back in those days.
In those days? He still is.

Both Dennis Allen and Aaron Kromer were acting head coaches at various points in the season.
Dennis Allen was not with the Saints in 2012. He was busy as head coach of the Raiders from 2012 to 2014. He didn't come back to the Saints til 2015 as a senior defensive assistant.
Joe Vitt was the interim head coach once he got back from his 6-game suspension. Kromer was the head coach for the first 6 games, and Vitt for the last 10.
