coming off a strong 2nd year I thought he was going to be pro bowl caliber this season. He showed flashes at times, but overall a pretty poor season.

Probably because of all the damn blitzing we did. Leaves our corners and safeties out on an island.

See: Vernon Davis 50 yard catch and run

This would be my guess as well

agree with this

until we get a new D coordinator and Jenkins performs the same way in a different scheme, I have to believe its Gregg Williams' scheme and playing him out of position

Because of our Janet Reno look-a-like defensive coordinator.

i think everything about our secondary took a step back this year. we need new blood in coaching/scheming it up

I think all the ineffectual blitzing accounted for our lack of turnovers in general. Seems like with all those clean pockets opposing QBs were able to sit back and deliver perfect passes over and around Jenkins every week. Someone gets in their face or creates pressure from behind, more of those passes are off target and Jenkins' (as well as the rest of the secondary) chances of getting to them improve dramatically.

And yes, I know this is obvious, but frick it, I'm annoyed and it's going to be a long offseason

I thought Greer played pretty well all year. I liked what I saw from Robinson as a young corner after the first few games. I think Johnny Patrick could be good. Jenkins will be fine and Harper just isn't a coverage guy no matter who our DC is. We really just need a pash rush IMO

porter is likely gone, so one of them HAS to take a step this next year

if we can somehow luck into a pass rusher or 2, we will be able to keep harper in the box

Dude had a shot at sticking Gore after a short gain late in the game but didn't. Even the idiot announcers pointed it out.

We lost our DB coach last year, and hiring a shitty replacement likely had a ton do with it as well as Gregg Williams a completely useless moron.

He is one of the best open field tacklers in the game... he had a great year. I Safeties generally aren't great cover guys, I don't think he was put in very god positions yesterday.

I'd have to blame Williams as well. He's all about the blitzing and utterly disregards the secondary.

I'm afraid of what our defense would have looked like without him back there. He had to cover up a lot of GW's bull shite.

The defense overall has not shown much progress at individual positions. This begs the question... is it misjudging talent, poor scheming, ineffective development/teaching of the talent or a combination of all three?

Overall it does seem that the talent is there on the D. I tend to believe our position coaches aren't teaching these guys properly. Combined with the piss poor scheming, this makes for a bad combination. Until we get a new DC in, we won't know for sure if the talent is bad or not. It's just way to early to tell right now with some players.

Agreed no FS could or should have covered Vernon Davis like that.

We need new blood on defense coaching and talent.
Problem is we don't have either. With all the free agents we have this year, it's going to be a few years before we can compete on the 2011 level again.

free safeties are supposed to be, esp when they're former CBs

He was asked to cover people instead of just playing 30 yards of the LOS?
