If we can sign him for a reasonable amount.

I wouldn’t say I want to but I’d prefer him over Taysom. Not sure what other options are realistic

I’d prefer to roll with Stafford if he’s willing to take a significant cut to go compete for a championship. If he’s not then I’d say Jameis. Let’s not forget that Jameis will get looked at by other teams this offseason I’m sure. The saints can only match so much money.

~20 other QBs
Winston on a cheap contract
Taysom
Winston on a big contract

I think we could win 7-10 games with Winston at QB, but he doesn't seem mature enough to lead a SB contender.

Can we afford Stafford? If so, yes.

You would lose the coach on the field going with Winston but you have a strong team and coaching staff that can put him in a position to succeed. You won't have a coach calling chuck it plays for 30% of the pass plays and I think you will see his interceptions come way down. We know he has all the physical tools, if he cuts down interceptions we can with 75% of our games and make a playoff run.

I feel like there’s a chance he learned a lot watching Brees and with Payton’s coaching. I wanna give him a shot because he can make all the throws and decision making is something that you learn and get better with experience. There are plenty of examples of players not playing so great early in their career and then turning out to be all time greats AKA Steve Young and Peyton Manning etc.

It may also be worth noting that Stafford is represented by Tom Condon.

He has the tools. Let's see what he can really do with this team.

No doubt in my mind the path forward for at least 2021 is to resign Jameis for 1 yr and let him compete with Taysom.

Edit: I believe Jameis will win the competition.

I was getting into the draft hard around the time that Jameis was coming out and I was absolutely stunned by his film. Obviously he’s been up and down in the NFL and most people think he has a relatively low ceiling now but I still believe he has the talent to be a top 5 QB in the NFL. If true, he will become that with us IMO.

Winston is guaranteed to be the starter in week 1 if he competes against Taysom. Anyone that thinks otherwise is delusional.

bullshite! I want him for $5-7 million, I don’t want him for $12-15 million. We need a cheap QB for a few years to catch up the cap space from Drew’s can being kicked so much.

Im not so sure that Stafford is going to get cut loose and I'm not sure the Saints are going to trade for him and his $33M cap number. Assuming Brees retires, that leaves the Saints with the following options:

Taysom Hill (Only QB on the roster)
Jameis Winston
Dak Prescott
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Cam Newton
Andy Daltion
Tyrod Taylor
Jacoby Brissett
AJ McCarron
Colt McCoy
Matt Schaub
Nate Sudefeld
Joe Flacco
Mitch Trubisky*

After that, you get into Geno Smith, Blaine Gabbert, Kyle Allen territory.

Jerry isn't going to let Dak go. He's especially not going to let Dak go to Sean Payton's team. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a big no for me. I'd just as soon stick w/ Taysom. Cam is washed up. He is a shell of his former self, although I would have loved to seen what Sean could have done with Cam in his prime. Also, I wouldn't mind watching the 50+ crowd flip over what Cam wears to press conferences. Winston is considerably more talented than anyone on that list, including Dak. The question is can Payton reign in his propensity to be a knucklehead on the field.

I say "Yes".

If you look at Jameis' performance pre-30 interceptions, his turnovers are not significantly more than what Drew did in his earlier years as a Saint. The Saints later placed an emphasis on protecting the ball and became one of the best in the NFL at doing it. Anyone who watched Winston's 30-interception season can see the parallels to the 27+ interception seasons of Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Favre, etc. Poor protection and the QB is asked to carry more than his fair share of the offensive burden. I belive it to be the outlier and his 11-14 interceptions seasons more the norm of a QB with such a big arm. The list of QBs capable of throwing for 5k yards is short and it takes more than just throwing the ball a lot. He is definitely not as efficient as Brees, but he's going to force defenses to cover every blade of grass on the field and that's going to open the offense up like 2011. Plus, there is little to no demand for his services, but he's signable.

Your other option is the draft. I don't see a QB capable of starting next year dropping down to #27/28. Maybe to trade up, but that's going to cost you draft capital in a season where this team is going to need to find cheap depth at CB, LB, OT and OG. Outside of Lawrence, Fields, Lance and Wilson who is left? Trask? Mac Jones? You might as well sign one of the McKnowns or Andy Dalton.

I wouldn’t mind having the red rocket if he was on a very cheap contract that allowed us to re-sign some of our own guys we might not have been able to if we were having to pay $12-$15 mil for a QB. Sean’s offense can make a lot of QB look good with high percentage passes and Dalton still out up respectable numbers on some absolute putrid Bengals teams. He’s not a star but he’s got a good arm with sneaky mobility and he’s always been a scrappy player going back to his TCU days. I just don’t think Winston, for all his talent, will ever kick that turnover bug.
