What moves do Saints need to make to be Super Bowl contenders

Thoughts from the board on what moves (realistically) the Saints should make to improve positions of need, and which positions are most urgent
Posted on 2/17/22 at 11:39 am to Lsujacket66
QB
Dynamic TE
More speed and athleticism at WR
Suring OL spots (LT/RT and competition at G)

Good to great O coordinator
Positions needed
If Armstead is leaving we need another T. Need WR even with MT, a veteran TE, another DT. Lutz needs to be healthy. I think Winston is good enough with competent WRs to get us far if we can resign him. Need to resign MW unless we wanna go back to giving up 40+ yard bombs multiple times a game again

If we don't re-sign Armstead...we should be able to get a 3rd round comp pick for him if we play our cards right.

I’m in the it doesn’t matter who QB is, keep a good to dominant Oline the best you can

I feel if they are wanting to make a play in Winston then we aren’t gonna be able to keep MW and TA. I’m all about Oline but youth comes in to play at some point and injury history, I go with MW. If we get a 3rd round comp for TA that’s all good. Regarding draft I prefer BPA so who knows.

Have a good QB & offensive coach

Pretty much nailed it.
We have beyond a championship defense. We will have continuity in defensive coaching. If this team can add weapons/better interior blocking...we are a QB away. And unfortunately, that is going to be the hardest part to figure out. You really need at least top 10-12 QB play to be able to compete at this point.
Chad, I know you disagree, but this is why I'm very pro Jameis. Because despite some of his struggles he has the potential of a top 10 QB and has been there for portions of his career. He can be a volume passer.

I prefer Winston over Hill but I think with MT, another at least decent WR, Trautman making a jump or adding a solid TE, he’d be good also. My biggest issue right now with Hill is health from injuries and if he’ll be ready for this season.
We have a good D but Taysom is the type that can keep you in games that are close, has a little bit of that clutch gene, and can pump a team and crowd up. Winston though can be a gun slinger and if down 3 TDs end of 3rd Q, Winston gets on fire and you can be right back in it.

QB
TE or two
WR or 3
center, BU center, guard, tackle
and after this pathetic debacle of a coaching search, its clear we need a new GM as well

The biggest issue I have with Taysom is that he will never be a large volume passer (he can be a mid volume passer probably). So with him at QB we would really need the offense to focus on using his other abilities. Which I think could totally happen but we'd probably need to shuffle the coaching or get a new OC to be able to do that. I don't think the way we tried to use Taysom last year would get the most out of him.

I understand you’re trolling and respect that. We are fine at C and BU center. Coaching search was fine but you know that and didn’t need me to tell you

Oh I agree, but his threat of running can cause headaches for defenses. He’s a decent enough passer they have to respect both though. As I said, I’d prefer Winston though

Sean Payton was scratching his head during the season thinking about all of this.
At the end of the season
He said, frick it, I quit

Super Bowl contenders haha? I hope this board never changes. Completely delusional.

The question is obviously going to be whether Jameis, a guy who knows your system but is coming off a significant knee injury, is a better option than what is realistically out there.
It is hard to see Seattle letting Wilson go. If they do, someone will have to pay a king's ransom to get him. Do you give up someone like Lattimore or another defensive stud, plus draft picks, to get him? I just don't see it happening.
Jimmy G is the most realistic trade opportunity. But is he really better than (potential) peak Jameis?
Are there any rookies in the draft for which you are willing to move up a bit from 18 to get? It doesn't seem like it.

Would be a luxury not a necessity if we can get

More speed and athleticism at WR
which is an absolute necessity.
The team is probably 2-3 starters and a few solid backups away from competing, especially if the defense stays mostly intact.
