What are the compensating picks we get for Payton?

Guy here in Texas seems to think a deal is already being worked for Sean’s return to Dallas next year. I remember hearing about some type of compensation picks due to his Saints contract if he left and hired within a few years after leaving the Saints.
Anyone care to explain those parameters and what to expect if that happens?
Let’s face it McCarthy is a dead man walking so this sounds legit and pretty much where we all figured he would end up.

Saints own CSP contract for 3 years. 2 years left.
Value goes down every year.
Last major coach to be traded like this was John Gruden. 2002 Raiders got 8 mil, 2 1st and 2 2nds.
Other than we would get more if its a nfc vs afc team that is about it.
Anything can happen.

I thought the Saints hold the rights to his contract in perpetuity. Seems weird that he could just bail on his contract, then wait three years and be a free agent. Maybe that is the case, just thought I heard otherwise.

Its possible to do but the Saints would have to pay him in perpetuity as slavery has been mostly eradicated

I would gladly take (2) 1st rounders and wish him and Skylene the best in Big D

The saints will just package their first and the two they got for Payton to move up 5 spots for an injury prone DE.

Very original and hilarious

1. Could never be equated to slavery.
2. Wouldn't that only apply if he's coaching? Doesn't make a ton of sense to me that anyone could just wait out a contract.

Wouldn’t necessarily have to pay, just depends on the language. In essence, Payton is not fulfilling his obligations under the contract; so he’d either need to buy out the contract or the year would extended. A lot of it depends on the specific language. Does it say he’s under contract through ‘24, or that the contract was for 5 years starting in 2020 (I think that was his last extension). I doubt anyone would have it outside of NOLA, so all we can do is speculate

Payton signed a contract with the Saints in 2019 that made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL. It was a five-year pact that paid him roughly $9 million annually. He made it through just two of those seasons before opting to step away.
However, Payton will still be under contract for the next three years despite leaving. As such, if he wants to return to the NFL in 2023, the Saints will still own his rights
I think this is correct.

So, there isn't necessarily a certain amount or number of picks that we get its whatever is negotiated between teams that we accept to let him out of the contract? I mean we aren't paying him so is it just the wording that keeps him tied in for 3 more years now?

Yes he is bound to the contract even though he quit. The Saints could void his contract over the next 3 years for anything they wish be it a chicken, picks or both.

It's effectively a non compete for the duration of his contract unless the Saints agree to some terms. And the saints have the leverage. So it is whatever Jerry is willing to give up.

I am hoping for 2 1sts and 2 2nds.
That would be pretty sweet. Seems like the more teams interested the better haul they should get. Rumor is three teams seriously interested ATM?

I've never thought to clarify; I always assumed NFL contracts were for specific durations (five years through 2024 for example) rather than for specific performance (five years of coaching, no matter how long it takes to complete those three years).
I was under the impression Payton would have been under contract through a specific year, after which he can do whatever he wants. Am I way off? Do NFL players contracts not work that way either?

More teams involved doesn’t matter. He isn’t going to coach for a team he doesn’t want to. The Browns could offer the Saints 10 firsts, if he doesn’t want to coach for them he isn’t going to come out of retirement. He’ll pick where he wants to go and then the Saints will have to negotiate what it will take for them to release him from his contract.

Yes. It’s a trade. He isn’t a restricted free agent or tag

Whatever is agreed to. I suspect the organization knew he would return and that is why they were so quick to trade as much as they did this past draft. I expect something like a 1 and a 2.
