Ian Book is the reason you watched the game and thought Penning struggled - then saw his elite PFF grade and wondered what you missed.
He is garbage. he takes a 10+ yard drop, NEVER CLIMBS, and always tries to escape the top of the pocket. He makes a tackle's job nearly impossible.

stop. you are becoming a cliche with this. No one expects him to be Larry fricking Allen in his first NFL game coming out of the Missouri Valley Conference. The kid will be good. Its time to gtf over it.
yes, he struggled on a few speed rush reps, got his feet crossed up and got beat inside 2 or 3 times. He also rode his rusher half way back to the opposite endzone several times only to have dumb-arse Ian Book run right into his blocking path. For the most part, he was solid in pass pro and surprisingly good in the run game.

why are you going off on a defensive deep end talking about Penning's very real pass protection struggles. My note the other day was "all it takes is one play" and Penning is nearly ending the qb's season on nearly every pass play he's involved in. You don't need to go hyperbole talking about larry alllen on day 1 bit.

The PFF scores did show his pass blocking was something like a 28, so saying he struggled may be an understatement 
But, anyone that thought he was going to come out and hold his spot just because he was a 1st rounder has no idea what they are talking about. His biggest negative was his pass blocking ability and footwork. But, every scout also said that if he's willing to learn, this can be coached out of him.

I acknowledged that he had some issues with the speed rush, and I am also acknowledging that Book contributed as much to his struggles as he did. So why cant both be true?
But I'm not sure what the expectations were for his first pre-season game, but it seems some on here are dying to declare the dude a bust. Were they expecting mid-career Roaf level dominance from a kid who was playing in the FCS last year?
I was pretty encouraged by what I saw out of him considering he was lined up against a veteran DE with 4.7 speed.
