Commissioner threatens disciplinary action for any “public discussion” of decision to proceed with draft

Posted by NBCsports on March 26, 2020, 10:05 PM EDT NBCsports
quote:

Commissioner Roger Goodell’s Thursday night memo to all teams made it clear there’s no benefit to be obtained from publicly arguing for a delay in the draft. The memo also made it clear that there’s a very real downside.

quote:

“The [Management Council Executive Committee] was also clear, and I share the Committee’s view, that public discussion of issues relating to the Draft serves no useful purpose and is grounds for disciplinary action,” Roger Goodell wrote to all teams in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by PFT.

Mickey Loomis wants to postpone the draft

Posted by NBCsports on March 25, 2020, 6:19 AM EDT NBCsports

quote:

The G.M. subcommittee privately (until someone leaked it) lobbied the NFL to postpone the draft on Tuesday. Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis is publicly doing so.

quote:

“I’d be personally in favor of delaying the draft, so that we could get some of the work done that our scouts and personnel people ordinarily do,” Loomis tells Peter King in the latest installment of the Peter King Podcast. “And then just the logistics of trying to conduct the draft with not having access to your draft rooms and your offices creates a lot of logistic problems. This is not a fantasy draft that you conduct out there with just a list of things on a piece of paper. There’s a lot of things that go into it to prepare, and there’s a lot of work that is done during the draft. Listen it’ll be very, very difficult to conduct that and do it in a way that you’re doing justice to the process.”

quote:

The G.M. subcommittee reportedly wants a delay due both to the incomplete nature of the information due to the COVID-19 pandemic and due to the fact that some states have “stay at home” orders and others don’t. (The NFL apparently reacted to the latter concern by shutting down all team facilities.)

quote:

“A large part of the information process hasn’t happened yet,” Loomis added. “And a lot of that gets done in the months of March and early part of April. And obviously we haven’t been able to do that. It doesn’t make it impossible, and yet it makes it much more of a gamble, much riskier than it would be ordinarily.”

quote:

But the risks will be the same for everyone, and if the draft proceeds as scheduled it ultimately will show which teams are good at making the most out of the least information. Or which teams are just lucky.

quote:

It probably will be the latter. The draft already is a crapshoot. Proceeding without complete information will make it even more crap than shoot. But given the league’s insistence on proceeding with free agency as scheduled, don’t bet that the league will do anything other than tell the various teams to deal with it.

If anyone in the Saints organization publicly come out favoring the Draft to be pushed back, then Goodell will for sure have it on April 23-25 in the regular scheduled time.

To stop being a bunch of pussies. If the man says they can't do their jobs properly, then take him at his word.
It doesn't matter what they used to do before all of the current testing. It's irrelevant. All of that stuff got put into place for a reason.
Sit back, bide your time, and when they return, we'll all appreciate sports in a way we never have before.

It’s like you didn’t even read what Loomis said

And if, as a team, you weren’t already working remotely as of yesterday, everyone is today per nfl mandate

On top of that, emergency resources in New Orleans are expected to be overwhelmed starting in early April. It would be insensitive to hold a draft when this thing is only worsening

The GMs and whatever organization lobbying for this comes across as the "pussies", for lack of a better word, to me. All teams are facing the same issues, the Saints aren't the only ones. If they were the only team dealing with this then it would absolutely be unfair, but whether it is everything normal or everything screwed up, either way it is still equal. Prospect scouting process, for all the money and resources that get thrown into it is still a crap shoot at best so at the end of the day WTF does it really matter?

.

What an absurd statement. It absolutely matters if they say it does. It has nothing to do with being "fair" and everything to do with these professionals being able to execute their job. You realize they can be fired for the decisions they make that day, right? They have every right to seek the ability to do their job in full.

There's another aspect to this whole thing, too. The players that didn't get invited to the combine aren't having a pro day to work out for scouts either. This is a full-on process, and you delegitimize it when you act as if all that happens is some dudes put some names on a piece of paper and hope to God that name is a star.

I would hate it but I do understand it.

Having a war room in zoom during an important time like the draft just wouldn’t be smart for any organization. Would be a total clusterfrick

What good would having the draft as scheduled really do for you besides give you 2 days of "entertainment?" It's not like you'd be able to see these guys in action with their new teams any sooner

It matters a lot if you can get fired over it. I'm sure there's lots of prospects who want it pushed back too since the scouting window has been shortened.

No one is claiming that the Saints are the only team that have these concerns. Mickey was the one who vocalized it,but it'd be foolish to think the 31 other teams' front offices wouldn't also love to carry out the whole process as thoroughly as possible, considering their job security is largely determined by how the offseason plays out

Sorry that the draft being pushed back would cause such a major inconvenience for you. Roger certainly must carry on as scheduled now

That’s just not true. Different cities have issued different local protocol depending on the severity.

Saints haven’t been allowed in their facility. Other teams have been
