NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Saints C Max Unger injured his foot and is expected to miss the start of the season.
The nature of the injury isn't yet known, but it sounds like Unger has a broken foot or Lisfranc injury. The Saints let top backup Tim Lelito walk as a free agent this offseason, so there isn't a clear replacement for Unger. Senio Kelemete may make the most sense or the Saints could explore a trade. Veteran Nick Mangold is also still on the free-agent market after his release.

#Saints center Max Unger underwent surgery on foot over the weekend, per source. Again, this is the same foot injury he dealt with in '16.

I wouldn't Count on him until next year. Foot injury on a 300+ lb dude could easily linger through this season.

Easy solution to this problem. Will give Mangold more than enough time to get in sync with Brees and the other linemen. Tough blow to Unger but if it's indeed a Lisfranc, then you've probably seen the last of him in Black and Gold.

I was actually going to make a joke the other day now that our OL is finally complete this will be the year we run out of luck with Unger and his history of injuries. frick

Time to sign Mangold with the quickness.
Even if Unger comes back he can be a viable backup. I'm sure he could play guard in emergencies too

don't know if its the same injury, but Watkins had his first one last april and wasn't really worth a shite at all last year.

Top backup was Kelemete. Lelito was passed and was being used as an injury fill in and tackle eligible while Kelemete was starting at LG and Peat at LT (while Armstead was out).

Yeah, so you could have melted even more.
Why draft another center/guard when we have like 10!?

Would you rather Pocic over Marcus Williams? Seattle took Pocic in the late 2nd round.

Mangold is coming off an ankle injury in his own right
When he did play last year he graded out towards bottom at C position
He's told teams he doesnt want to play guard already
He's 33
Can you say Olin Kruetz?!
Sometimes ya gotta know when to hold, and when to fold em
You don't go out and get a Mangold. This is why you have Klemete, and to a lesser extent, Allen.

i agree, but is there truthfully harm in bringing him in and letting him compete with Kelemete/Allen
Kelemete is our jack of all trades lineman, I would prefer if he was not playing center because if he goes down we don't have a prime backup at LT/LG. Strief should never touch the left side and I think everyone here wants Ramcyzk to spend all his time at RT to replace Strief this year or next and not have this cross-training nonsense we did with Peat. (He excelled at LG, we just kept trying to force him into LT and RT).
