I personally like Jake Haener out of Fresno. Smart, accurate, gutsy, clutch. Plays within himself and throws catchable balls that put his skill guys in position to get YAC.

Me, months ago. Where are the Hooker and Bennett fanboys who’ve had their dicks rolled up like toothpaste tubes after exhausting themselves all off-season?

Let’s watch a preseason game before we victory lap my boy.

I remember some hype about Book in camp, but it was clear by rep 1 or 2 in his first preseason that he was actually dogshit.

So I’m looking forward to see Haener play in somewhat meaningful game action.

Nope. I was gassing up Haener in winter well before the Senior Bowl and getting downvoted by the Saints Talk lil guys who were beating the drum for Hooker, Bennett, and Carr. Now some of those same lil guys are acting like they'd never heard of Haener before we drafted him and are eating up the camp hype.

“Lighting up” training camp as a third string is a hell of a lot different than being a serviceable NFL QB.

Stetson bennett has a bunch of articles about his strong training camp so far also. Hooker is out for training camp

Until they start the preseason games, dont get excited about anyone.

If Haener looks really good in the games, by all means, get excited.

I’ll definitely give you your flowers if he’s actually good in preseason.

But I’m not ready to trust what our beat writers think after 2 days of 7 on 7 drills.

But I’ll come back and personally give you your flowers if you are right.

Bc you probably are one of the few people that actually knew who he was when we drafted him.

Personally my QB evals for this draft began at Bryce Young and ended at Hendon Hooker. I used to do a little more homework on the draft, but I stopped doing so bc the Saints never pick who I want them to pick anyway lol. Hard to get excited about prospects and then watch us pass on them.

So I mainly just see who we pick and hope for the best. We do miss at times, but our hit rate seems to be above average for the NFL. I think a lot of us are lumping Haener in with Grayson and Book bc those were our most recent mid rd QB’s. So we are pretty conditioned not to expect much out of him considering he fits that similar undersized QB mold.

I personally think Brees is a unicorn and it’s going to be incredibly hard to find another short qb with a mediocre arm, mediocre speed, that is actually great like Brees was.

I was so excited when the Saints drafted him. I feel like with Sean he would draft low potential QB’s and try to develop them to show how smart he was. We have not had a real, young QB w talent in sooo long.

Haener will sit the bench for a couple of years no matter
how good or bad he looks in training camp. The Saints dont
need him for 2 more years.JH will be a player down the road.
I don`t care what he looks like now.He aint beating out
DC.

I totally get what you are saying because I am the same way but its kind of funny to think "those idiot scouts and GMs didn't do what 3PieceSpicy wanted!"

You know you are off to a good start as a rookie when the coaches say 'the game doesn't seem to fast for him' when thats one of the biggest hurdles for rooks.

I wonder how many "the 3rd string Q.B. looks like the next Drew Brees during training camp" threads we going to have this year. I like Haener too but I am not believing the hype around a training camp practice.

Of course he’s not beating out DC, and I think people are going a little overboard after only a week of practice with their projections of him being like a 10-12 year starter like I saw in one thread. (not that that’s impossible, just highly unlikely for ANY quarterback).

But, while I agree that the Saints won’t need him for 2 more years, I think his value could be expedited if he continues to be far ahead of the mental game for a typical rookie QB like he apparently seems to be, by becoming a viable #2 by his 2nd season. Or even in his 1st if some team’s starter goes down and they are so desperate they offer something for Jameis that’s too good to turn down.

But I think the more realistic year is next year, which would still be way ahead of schedule. Most 4th round QBs that the team likes and doesn’t want to risk losing wind up on the 53, but are usually healthy game day scratches. Teams with playoff hopes are gonna want to carry a vet backup (and his salary) and not put their eggs in the basket of a 2nd-year, 4th round QB. But if Haener can develop to where their comfortable with him being the actual #2, the value he provides is twofold: 1) it saves a roster spot by not having to protect your young 3rd stringer, and 2) it potentially saves $3-$10 million a year, depending on what you were paying your veteran backup.

That would be significant value provided by a 4th round QB in just his 2nd year. And hell, if he does have to go in there and actually win games, that’s even more. So again, while I think a lot of fans are getting a bit over their skis with their excitement on him after just 1 week, he could be a very valuable asset early on, even if he doesn’t get on the field.

Coaches usually know right away if a guy can play or not. Brock Purdy had good reviews from coaches kinda saying the same things our coaches are saying about Haener. But it’s still practice, we will see what he’s made of under the big lights.
