This Saints rebuild should have started when Brees retired 4 years ago.

Then the roster would be in a lot better shape than it is today.

Pretty sure anyone with a functioning brain has had this take since Brees left

Guess no one in the Saints front office has a functioning brain.

I mean yeah I’d largely agree with that. Not really a gotcha.

Wrong. You dont replace a hall of fame when they retire. Their replacement should already be in the building. Thats how dynasties are built.

You make it sound so easy. How many franchises have been in this position?

Montana to Young and Favre to Aaron Rodgers. Two in the last 40 years.

To many fools on here thought Jameis was the replacement in the building.

Brees should have retired three years earlier

So Brees should have retired before the 2018 season? The year after they were a few snaps away from the nfc championship? The year before they were one awful call away from being in the Super Bowl? How dumb are you?

I didn’t mind them trying with the roster they had. They had an elite head coach, Jameis had us at what, 5-2? The moment he got hurt and Payton retired this should have been a fire sale. Hiring Dennis Allen was a horrific decision then signing Carr to that deal was the nail in the coffin. It’s over and done now and they’re now in rebuild mode. Let the suck continue for a while

Truth is, good teams that have competent, forward thinking people calling the shots in the front office aren't scared to make moves for the future, while they are competing to win NOW. Those teams seem to always have a plan in place to have a real viable QB on their roster, and make it a priority to plan for their QB future.

Weren't the Saints about to be 4-1 and beat the Bucs before that injury? NO had the pieces to still be a 13 win team that year. Winston took a lot of heat that I do not think was fair. We will never know how a full season would have gone, but he was definitely playing at a level that would have won the South and made a playoff push.

I don’t mind their approach post Brees. The issue was their approach post Payton. The second he “retired” they should have shifted course and taken their lumps on a rebuild.

Not necessarily

You also have to draft right, sign the right FAs etc. Even if they started earlier its no guarantee we are in any better shape.

We are in better cap shape probably but chances are they still overpay the wrong talent.

Just look at almost ending up with Watson. The only thing that saved us was a dumber team in Cleveland
