Multiple reports on the kicking battle this morning:

Jeff Duncan

NOF

In a nutshell, everyone is impressed by Smyth. Duncan thinks that Grupe will get the job because of consistency inside 50. Underhill seems more positive that Grupe will get the job for the same reason, even though (as he does a lot) never actually comes out and says that and waffles a lot in his prediction.

Triplett isn't so sure about Grupe and says that in his opinion Grupe hasn't been that much more consistent than Smyth, so maybe Smyth has a chance.

I think it will come down to something Duncan said in his piece. Dennis Allen is a conservative guy by nature and will do the NFL chalk thing which is keep the more reliable kicker and try to stash the rookie on the PS. On the other hand, they did not do the chalk thing last year regarding this position, so who knows.

We need to grab the 49ers punter as soon as he hits waivers. I’ll drive the tattoo guy back to New Zealand or wherever the frick he’s from even if it means drowning.

My biggest thing about Grupe is that last year, in pressure situations, he really shanked these kicks bad. GB, Houston, Jax, and ATL games were notable misses and it didn't seem to get better as the games went on.

10/12 from within 30. No kicker missed 2 or more.
I can forgive the 40+ kicks (8/10 from 40-49; 6/9 from 50+).

The issue is practice vs pressured situation in game are two different atmospheres for these guys. Smyth is also an international player learning the game which can really frick us up (Hi Hedley). I think begrudgingly you have to trust Grupe going into the year.

Grupe has never been consistent enough to warrant such a vast leg difference imo

Smythe likely will be stashed on the PS. As an international player, we get an extra PS spot for him.

Allen will keep grupe imo.

Why can't we get a new punter?

Shite is crazy.

Hopefully they grab whoever the niners cut. Probably pressley harvin.

Grupe is the better kicker right now.

I could be wrong about this international player designation but iirc Smyth doesn’t count against the roster and would count against the 53 man roster perhaps unless he dresses and plays.
So I understood it to be a situation where the team could carry him and Grupe at least for this first season.

That's just an additional PS spot, which means he would be open to be signed elsewhere. With his leg, someone is going to take a flyer on him. If Smyth is not on the 53, he is good as gone.

Just remember they cannot go from PS to PS. If you sign a player from a teams PS you must sign him to your active 53 man team. So I think he would be safe.

Can't see a team taking a flyer on an unproven kicker just because he has a strong leg. He would have had to prove consistency as well. Have other teams seen enough to take that leap?

You know how it goes. Early in the year, teams bring in kickers for tryouts cause their current guy ain't cutting it. So, lets say a team brings in 3 kickers. Smyth is one of them. How do you think his leg will work in a tryout? Someone will take him off the PS eventually.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it works like that. Teams can only bring in free agents for tryouts. So if Smyth is on our PS, the only way another team could snag him is by signing to their active 53. And like previously mentioned, that would be a HUGE gamble. Teams can't just bring in other PS players for tryouts all willy nilly. And I'm pretty sure he additional protections from the International player program
