Here are the reasons why this is a real possibility come January:

1) This is the final year of Colston's contract.

2) The rise of Jimmy Graham as Brees' new favorite target is seriously impacting Colston's numbers. His days of 80-90 receptions a season are long gone.

3) He is currently the highest paid receiver on the team by $1.6M. Hit on salary cap for 2011:

Colston- $4.7M
Henderson- 3.1M
Moore- $2.6M
Meachem- $1.5M
Graham- $571,000

[FWIW, I see Henderson not lasting too much longer either at that pay. He's not earning that salary and will probably take a pay cut or leave as well.]

4) Brees' contract extension is going to force dramatic cuts. The Saints aren't going to pay $4.7M (or more) for a WR unless he's a Randy Moss-style game changer.

5) Colston's had multiple knee surgeries and can't seem to stay healthy. He's played in all 16 games only twice in 6 years.

At the end of the day, the Saints are going to offer Colston around $3-4M a year. Colston will get offered 20-30% more to play elsewhere and probably take it. It sucks, but that's just the business side of football. There are enough dollars to go around and we'll have to make cuts where they make the least impact on the team. Brees can make an average receiver good and send a good receiver to the Pro-Bowl.

Interesting analysis. My guess is Brees will have a lot to say about it. We all saw how instrumental he was in making sure Moore got paid.

I agree with most of what you're saying.. IF he does leave, I'll miss him.. class act on and off the field.. seems like a great guy and he should be thankful for his days in NOLA, which I'm sure he is

I think he'll be back. If not its a huge loss, imo.

Weeks 1-3, last week and today I think he has what 2 total catches?

Not saying I don't want him on the team, but the Saints by no means should over pay for him.

Tons of WRs make that much. They just gave Moore more than that and he's far from that kind of a player.

If he gets through this season healthy, he's going to get $7m+ a season.

And they're not going to cut Devery next season unless they extend Meachem or Colston. They're not going to let 3 of their 4 WRs go in one offseason.

I could see Colston leaving, though. I wish Morgan stayed healthy, would have been nice to see if he is capable of being a contributor before making those tough decisions on the WRs next offseason.

it would be a huge loss, IMO. we don't have another WR of his caliber right now.

No way are the Saints allowing their #1 WR to walk.

I'd be willing to bet Brees will be open to taking slightly less to make sure his playmakers hang around. Manning did the same thing.

I won't be surprised if Colston leaves. But if he does, it will be because someone gave him too good a deal to pass up, not because we wouldn't pay him. Similar to Fujita.

it would be a mistake to let colston walk

now, i dont want to pay him elite, top 5 WR money, but he is certainly deserving of a healthy contract

He would have already signed his contract, ensuring we could use the franchise tag on Nicks or Colston, if he were willing to take less money.

No he didn't.

No way we lose Colston. He's the type of guy who will give us a hometown discount

Not even a teeny bit worried.

Well, thats just it. I'm not sure he's our bona fide #1 anymore. The way Brees throws, there will never be an absolute indispensable #1. I have much respect for Colston and he's ben a favorite of mine for years, but I dont think he gets $6-7M a year from the Saints FO. But I'm also pained to admit that if he left, he could be replaced.

He's far and away our best WR. None of our WRs are close to his level.

Jimmy Graham has nothing to do with Colston.

He runs 4-5 routes a game up the seam that leave him open to getting destroyed. None of our current wide receivers could run those routes.

He's missed 12 games in the regular season in his whole career. Considering his physical nature, that's not bad.

All WRs get hurt. See Andre Johnson, Welker, Nicks, Calvin Johnson, Desean Jackson, Britt, TO etc. It's inevitable.

It's a position built mostly for finesse, not power. These guys aren't squatty, 220 lb running backs. They are tall, lean, skilled guys.
