The agent for Wil Lutz throwing shade at the Saints

Can’t really say I disagree with him here. Love Grupe but Lutz has proven he can do it in this league. Cade York had a great rookie camp for Cleveland and he’s on the street now. I hope this doesn’t blow up in our face but let’s face it, we are Saints fans, of course it will. More than anything I wish Lutz well and hope he has a monster year. Great guy off the field. I had the chance to duck hunt with him a few years back. Very humble guy. He will be missed.

He’s an agent. It’s kind of his job to say that. But I hope Grupe is the next great kicker, I’m just not sure I would have been able to take that risk.

I mean when Lutz himself admitted that he was having a confidence problem that was a big red flag.

Last year Lutz hit 74% of his kicks, which is really bad and was one of the worst kickers in the nfl. That included multiple misses from inside 40. On top of that, he’s one of the highest paid kickers in the league. Pretty easy decision to be honest.

He was also coming off an injury and had been by all accounts outstanding in camp. You can have your opinion but for me I want my kicker to have been through the fire. He’s only 29 so he can easily kick another 7-10 years. I hope Grupe proves me wrong.

It was Lutz job to lose and he did just that. A season can be lost due to kicking issues so I hope we made the tight call. Time will tell.

If everythings equal tge cost of lutz was probably a big factor. I preferred to keep Lutz myself but we have to trim the fat somewhere.

Kicking in Denver is a lot different than kicking in New Orleans....CSP knows that.
Lutz fricks up once and CSP will cut his arse..Lutz should be able to blast 60+ yarders on the reg in Denver

And when you are in the league for 7 years, finish top 5 once, 1 more time in the top 10, bottom 5 once, and middle of the pack 3 times; the team is going to believe they can take chances to upgrade over what "averages out" to a middle of the pack kicker

Your claims that Lutz was "top 5 kicker" were proven wrong with actual statistical evidence in the other thread. The reality is Lutz hasn't been a top 10, let alone 5, kicker in 4 years. That's a bit problematic considering he is being paid in the top 10. He was in the middle of the pack in 2020; hurt all of 2021, and was the second to worst kicker in terms of FG% last season (though he was 100% on XPs)
All things considered, it wouldn't have been unreasonable to keep him on the team. But if another team is willing to give you a draft pick to take him and his high (relative to kickers) salary, I see why you do it.
We are all sorry you lost your duck hunting buddy. But the NFL is a harsh, results oriented business. Clearly the Saints felt his results weren't worth passing up a draft pick and paying the high salary. And remember, Lutz was once an UDFA in his own right. That's how most kickers make the team. It's one of those positions where supply often outpaces demand.
Grupe may not be perfect this year. But if they Saints fail to win it won't be because they traded Will Lutz.

We would have definitely lost the divisional round playoff game in Minnesota if not for Wil's TWO game-winning 40+ yard FGs. Both were top 5 FGs in franchise history.
