Saw Katherine Terrell’s tweet about it. I remembered 3 of the 4.

Forgot Sherman but remembered Carthon, Henderson (who i really liked) and Martz

Safe to say they nailed that hire

Henderson was a hot name back then.

Wasn't he the jets db coach?

Sherman was the candidate that many fans wanted then.

the first time i really noticed Sean Payton was in the NFC Championship game January 2001.

Vikings @ Giants Payton was the OC for the Giants.

I remember rooting for the Giants because the Vikings had just put us out of the playoffs the week before 34-16. That ended our 2000 season in Haslett's first year.

But anyway, the Giants absolutely ripped up the Vikings 41-0.

then the Giants had the daunting task of taking on the Ravens in the Super Bowl against that great defense.

What a list. One offensive coordinator of the lowest scoring offense, an average defensive coordinator, and two head coaches who had just been fired who would have learned nothing between jobs. None became after an NFL head coach after interviewing. Sherman, Carthon, and Henderson combined for five more years as just a unit coordinator. Martz had the most "success" with multiple coordinator jobs but it was entirely off reputation and he proved only to be a fraud.

And we hired the guy that had play calling duties stripped away and saw the offensive play much better. It worked out but, man, I remember not liking any candidates and thinking "is the job really THAT bad?"

Pretty sure Jim Fassel ripped the playcalling duties from him midway through the season in a very public tirade.

Didn’t McCarthy and SP both interview for the Green Bay job, and GB hired McCarthy so SP then went to the Saints?

I remember two things about the Payton hire:

1) got playcall duties taken away over tiki barber in New York. Had me concerned

2) seeing him at the senior bowl in a very oversized Saints pullover and an overstuffed soft side briefcase, hustling around trying to get started on his big chance.

I was not optimistic, but he exceeded all expectations.

My dumbass 22-year old self wanted Mike Martz and for us to draft Matt Lienart.

Talk about nailed it!

Imagine if Green Bay hadn't shite the bed and actually hired the offensive genius in Payton, rather than the bland arse McCarthy. Rogers was already there in 2006 and he would have had a few years of Farve, with the benefit of playing the shite arse North for a decade. He could already have 4-5 Super Bowls.
