Their secondary commited to not letting anyone get deep.

Their pass rush was good and didn’t allow deep plays to develop.

Brees took what was given and had a lot of short dump offs.

Our running game was working quite nicely.

The saints played how they will to win against good competition. That is the blueprint for winning a championship. Brees doesn’t have to throw it 50 times a game to win.

they gave the underneath and brees took it. their best db was out so they were conservative.

Pretty much this. That's what they did a lot of the games last year was give up nothing deep and force us to run/pass short and grind out drives. A lot of QBs get impatient and want to go deep anyway, but IMO, Brees loves that. Our drive starting at the end of Q3 into Q4 was so masterful.

They put trust in their DL to stop the run and went all out on pass defense. We were able to gash them from time to time because of it, though. It's why this offense is so good this year, they can run and pass.

Having our entire OL right now especially against the Minny front 4 was huge.

but 44 of that was on a catch that really wasn't.

I wonder why

Can't see covers on tv but the announcers did mention minny playing back and trying to force everything in front.

I guess it was Drew gonig through his reads constantly and never finding anything. If we were going to take the underneath route, our receivers weren't doing their job getting open.

They got a few stops but I never felt like we couldn’t move the ball on them. We also kept Watson and Hill in a lot to help block.

I also feel like we got conservative after Payton watched Minnesota march up and down the field on our D so he went to a more ball control style of offense instead of trying to sling it like we did against New York and Washington and Atlanta.

Having said that, I think we need Ginn back or we need to trade for another weapon. Kamara and Thomas are great but we need a realiable 3rd option we can turn to when teams take those two away

I can see going with the underneath if that's what they are giving you, but didn't seem like we took advantage of it all. 18/23 for 120 yards. When was the last time we saw a Drew stat line like that?

Quite simply, the object of the game is to win, not to rack up stats. And Payton and Brees both understand that.

We were playing in a Primetime road game against a good team that crushed our souls to end last year. They were playing back and very safe. Using a boxing analogy, Brees and offense were circling and trading jabs, looking for an opening.
Defense suddenly goes nuts, taking the game from 10-13 and in trouble (Vikings driving to extend the halftime lead), to providing a 27-13 lead.
The strip and return was huge to give us the lead.
The 4th down hold was huge to give us a short field and extend the lead.
The pick 6 was obviously huge to give us a safe margin.

Like I said, Brees and Payton understand the game, and aren't just about stats. Leading 27-13 in the 2nd half on the road, the game plan changed to run clock and play keep-away, not to challenge for more points.
And it worked, we won.

Hill is the fastest on the team right? Or at least second to Ginn.

With Ginn on IR, teach Hill a few deep routes and throw at least one to him to prove you’re willing to do it. He may prove to be a poor receiver, but showing the threat may be enough to open up the offense as former deep threats have done.

Hill is a phenomenal athlete, so it’s not hard to imagine he’d be at least competent enough to catch a deep ball if it’s there.
