Put Haener with starters and you’ll see he’s a good backup QB.
Say Carr went down first game and Haener had to start all 17 games, how many games do you think we’d win? I say under 5.

Probably accurate. He’s a 2nd year qb
and I’m saying that he’s a backup.
For the record. I’d put Rattler as the backup for this season. But Heaner has a place in the NFL for the next 15 years.

So we have to carry 3 QBs.
No way Haener or Rattler wouldn’t be poached.
I make Rattler QB2, cut Haener in the last wave of roster trimming tomorrow, and if he passes waivers put him on practice squad.
I do not think that Haener would be poached. He's a serviceable backup option right now strictly for the Saints because he spent the last 2 off-seasons here. Anywhere else he'd be starting with brand new offense, personnel, and terminology right before week 1 and I just simply do not think he's good enough to overcome that to be effective on a team anytime this season, or at least the first half of this season. For a team jump on him they would have to either A) think he's a starter, which I would find hard to believe or B) have a steady starter in place and looking at long term back-up QB situation which I'd be a little surprised to see another team view him as that much of an upgrade over their own QB2 to sign Haener to occupy a roster spot knowing he likely wouldn't be able to do much this season.
Rattler as QB2 this year I do not believe has any downside compared to Haener being QB2 this season. So at that point backup QB for 2024 is accounted for. 2025 backup at a minimum is Rattler because we probably have to keep Carr on due to dead cap. Possibly he even shows enough to make Saints consider cutting Carr if he has a bad 2024 season and they want to give Rattler a chance to start for the last couple games of the year. At that point season is likely gone (unless we're winning & Carr went down with injury) so let Rattler get some valuable playing time experience. If Haener was poached, we would still sign another practice squad QB from somewhere, we would either IR someone with a minor injury to create a 53 man spot to promote the backup QB. If that backup we wouldn't think is anything more than a practice squad guy then we would poach from another roster or sign Nathan Peterman to hold a clip board for a few weeks, then look to acquiring a veteran backup in the off-season
Trying to keep all 3 on active roster also depends on what they do with Nick Saldiveri, Kendre Miller, Mason Tipton. If those guys are healthy enough to not go on IR then that lessens likelyhood of keeping all 3. If any go to IR and don't count for a roster spot for several weeks then its possible

I’m implying he’s the future and Haener is the future backup.
Haener isn't anything special. The ONLY reason he was selected is because the Saints FO has spent the better part of a decade thinking they were going to hit on the next Drew Brees...i.e. an undersized QB with an average arm that transcends those limitations to become a HOF QB. There is a reason teams don't particularly covet small QB's with average arm strength. They rarely work out. Brees was unique. There would be no shortage of moderately talented backups for the future is Haener is cut.

Hopefully trade Carr after this season.
If Carr is bad enough this year to warrant the Saints wanting to trade him, then his trade market would be next to nothing. That's even more highlighted by the fact he carries a big contract number. Maybe on John Madden football it isn't the case, but in real life teams aren't all that interested in trading assets for below average QBs with big salaries.

Carr is here through at least 2027, unfortunately
Use these next 2-3 years to get the cap stabilized. Add some true young assets. Let Rattler learn under Kubiak. Circle 2026 or 2027 to roll him out
Unfortunately we will be mid enough to not draft inside the top 10

I don't know if I'd go all the way through 2027, but definitely through 2025, and very likely through 2026

You'd hope that will be the case. The Saints have shown they MAY be accepting that approach with their moves this past offseason...i.e., they didn't sign any high priced FA's they couldn't afford without backloading contracts, they didn't trade away future draft picks to move up in the first round, thus far, they have avoided panic signings to fill clear gaps on this roster (most notably at OL and WR)
I wouldn't be surprised if this is the final year in New Orleans for guys like Davis, Lattimore, Kamara, Jordan, Mathieu, etch.

I'll start off by saying, I don't think he's tradeable because of the dead money, but to answer some questions
His salary could be a little much the next few years, but a team trading for him also would not have to worry about the bonus money you typically have to deal with for a starting QB. Also, if a team is trading for a player like Carr, the intent is he will be your starter. So, they would also intend to extend him, which could alleviate some of the salary concerns.
All bonus money that has been paid, but not counted against the cap will "come due" against the cap. 99% of the time, bonuses are paid in 1 year, and are spread over 5 years. If you cut a player, you would also need to pay the guaranteed money, and have that count against the cap. In a trade, the new team takes on the guaranteed money.
In Carr's situation, trade him after this season, his cap hit would still be $40M because of the signing bonus, and this off season's restructure. Trade next year, his cap hit would be $28.7M (assuming Mickey doesn't restructure his contract AGAIN)
quote:
Not sure there’s gonna be a huge market for him with his salary. Not sure we could get much for him either, which is fine. If Ratt or Jake are ready to start next year, I’d basically give Carr away for a 5th and probably pick up a good bit of his ‘25 salary if that’s what it takes.

I never understand how all the dead money works in NFL trades, though. It might not even be possible.

None of them are very special.
Rattler is intriguing and shows a lot of potential. And that is enough for me to be excited about.

If Taysom would have made that underthrow to AT Perry, there would have been 6 threads immediately started as SEE HE'S NOT AN NFL QB

Not me.
I would have celebrated for months that he hit a receiver in the hands.

Someone grabbed Ian Book off waivers. Haener would not clear waivers.

But he has potential to be solid backup. Smart teams are trading for backups (Packers)
