I will never understand anyone who is ok with giving up a 4th for him, especially in the current state of the franchise.

Not all 4ths are the same, the rate we going it will be around the top 100.
Some of our best players in Saints history were taken around that spot.
Jahri Evans, Jimmy Graham, Trey Hendrickson…..

Vele is still under contract for 2 more years after this year. That's 3 years a Saint for a draft pick. Ain't any different had we used pick on a different draft pick.

I'd get it more if the guy was 22-23 years old and showing some promise in his rookie year. We're basically missing an entire contract and even if he's worth keeping, you're then paying him at 30. Just seems like a weird fit timing wise as I think everyone will admit we're going to struggle for the duration of his rookie contract.

This is true, but if you happen to hit on that 4th rounder, you can have a foundational piece for the next decade.
That’s not the case with Vele, most receivers start to fall after they hit 30-31.
Look at Amon St Brown taken at the top of the 4th round that year.
The Titans receiver taken in the 4th round this year has pretty much taken over the number one receiver role for them after a few games.

On its own, it’s not that bad a move. But combined with the other moronic decisions from this GM, you can see why are people are screaming bloody murder.
