I know he had the Achilles but what a great deal by Loomis for such a good player. He just got one of Marcus Williams’ few equals as a single high safety and they got him for 9 million instead of $14 mil. I take that risk all day with Maye because he’s damn good and that extra $5 mil we saved could be all the difference in getting someone like Armstead back.

So per PFF, he had a bad coverage grade last year in limited snaps due to injury.
The three years prior, he got good run and coverage grades and was franchise tagged. Also, played more deep safety in those years than this year.

Yep he only played mid field 30% of the time he played last year. May not really be a true replacement for Williams.
Also, he had a DUI and may begin the season suspended. So we are paying $10m a year for a significantly worse safety than we had, who might miss a chunk of the season and is coming off the most difficult injury in sports. All of this while barely under the cap and trying to trade for a top 5 QB who is going to demand top dollar moving forward, and not having added a single WR yet.

I really thought with our cap situation we’d give PJ the starting safety spot. He seemed to do pretty good the games he played there. But Maye is a good player.
Kinda thought we’d make a run at lanarcus Joyner, the other jet safety, also coming off missing the year. He was a pretty good FS for the Rams and was franchised by them a few years ago.

Assuming Maye comes back 100% from his injury...I think this is a great value signing. Thankfully, his injury made him less expensive.
We're probably going to wait 2 or 3 days to sign free agents, b/c that's when the value starts happening. We really couldn't wait to sign Maye though. It was either sign Maye right away or draft a Free Safety.
I think we made the right move.

Maye is much better than joyner. Joyner had to be moved from free safety because his performance was so bad.

Maye is going to sign a one-year, prove-it deal in free agency after rupturing his Achilles in the midst of his 2021 campaign. The Jets safety role changed this past year when he played far more in the box, which played a part in a dip in PFF grade. But his multiple seasons of high grades at deep safety should draw interest from several teams. Since 2018, Maye owns the second-highest PFF grade at free safety, behind only Kevin Byard. — Treash

Every other year he played a true free safety role. I don't love that he is going to be 29 coming off an achilles but he is a good free safety.

Maye's last full season was excellent. The 2017 second-round pick finished 2020 with 82 total tackles, 11 passes defended, two sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. Entering 2021, PFF's Sam Monson listed Maye as the seventh-best safety in the NFL.
