Guess this is the future we’re stuck with having our former DC as a HC. I’d much rather have spent that money on offense.

We’re we not supposed to replace Marcus Williams with someone? Wtf are you talking about??

You are telling me we could not have gotten a safety for cheaper than 9.5m AAV?

You realize we just lost our starting FS who was one of the best players on our Defense right?

Was your plan just not to replace him?

My plan would be to replace him with a player that is not getting top 15 money at the position. We cannot spend top dollar at every position. Sign a middle grade FA and plan to prioritize it in the draft.

I didn’t skim it. The only amount that matters in NFL contracts is the guaranteed money. Hence the word “essentially”.

The rest of the numbers are almost always bullshite.

Played with CGJ at UF

Huge drop off at safety after him and Mathieu. Had to get 1 of them

He’s coming off an Achilles. Without that injury he’s probably getting more than Williams

No he's not.

The guaranteed money is not the only figure that hits the cap. For a team playing as close to the line as it gets, every dollar matters.

By that logic, then wouldn’t it just be a 2 year deal? If the total is $28.5M over 3 years, and only the $15M guaranteed matters; then the only portion of the contract relevant would be the first 2 years when just about all (most likely all and then some) will have been incurred. Therefore, your excuse would have made sense if you said it’s really a 2 year $7.5M per year deal

He gets 15m guaranteed, he plays all 3 and it comes out to 28.5.

At best it comes out to like 2/17 (vet min for 2 years and 15mil signing bonus/guaranteed money).

It's not "just 5 years aav" for a starting fs with a major injury.

It’s the only amount that matters in NFL contracts.

If he’s getting more than 5 he’s hitting incentives, and if he’s hitting incentives then that’s good for us. The last thing I’m worried about is the cap.

It’s all about what incentives are likely and unlikely.

Given his injury and possible suspension, I bet he has a lot of unlikely incentives year 1.

No Byrd had us thinking we have the new LOB. Was an all-pro safety and the first splash signing i can remember Payton making (don’t count Brees because that wasn’t considered a splash move at the time). This feels like a solid move

Byrd got almost double the guaranteed money when the cap was much lower.

It’s not even close.

It’s been 4 months since his injury. I’m sure we are well aware of where he’s at with it.
